According to the PET (no specific call-outs to anything unique on the RS) and the Carrera RS technical overview manual, there are no differences noted at all.
That said, not long ago (cant recall who) stated pretty emphatically that the RS muffler cans were "quieter" to meet some sort of European requirement for the 3.8L. Never personally fact checked that (hence the "believe they are quieter" comment) until I looked at the PET and Carrera RS manual just now. I don't see any evidence of there being differences. Headers, cat, mufflers all seem to be standard.

Well we know the 'mufflers' are different, as they have different part numbers. But I doubt anyone has cut up an RS muffler to see the internal differences. External dimensions are the same, RS to standard.

The Mufflers are only different in regards to Bishoff or the Gillet manufactured versions, model year, and for the later in relation to the M159 'engine sound package' (which consists of a different airbox and tips).
No specific different system for the RS.
I take everything back and claim the opposite
sorry for that ...
Above is for the US PET Version
The German PET version shows clearly 2 other muffler versions (again Bishoff or the Gillet manufactured) specifically for the RS (M64.20);
which is slightly weird as it has to same part numbers as the US M159 package .... .
So conclusion might be that for the RS, the engine sound package is a standard... but seems also that there is still no difference in the muffler...
So it is therefore unlikely that the RS was quieter than other models

My brain failed me on that one. The M64.20's mufflers are in the US PET too but for whatever reason since I didn't see "Carrera RS" as designated on other parts, it didn't register pre-coffee in the morning.
Interesting however that it's not mentioned in the Carrera RS technical overview manual at all.

there were 3 different mufflers used on n/a 993,
there was additional f/g deadening material which has been removed from all of these
base was this one w/ the small cross tube
motor sound and RS has a larger cross tube
there was also an RS version for Austria which was quieter, no pics of that one
and then there was the tt version
tt version flows best, the others are a toss up for flow

It really did - you and I posted the same info a few months back - your data was the same as mine, but much easier to read!
- All of them begin with 993.111 followed by:
- .045 = left, .046 = right, followed by:
- .04, .11 or .13 = standard muffler
- .05, .10 or .14 = RS muffler
- .07, .12 or .15 = Motor Sound muffler (sound pkg M159)
- .53 or .54 = Turbo muffler
- .045 = left, .046 = right, followed by:

David,
The RS muffler that comes with the 993 3.8 motor kit, or ones from a factory 3.8 RS is different from a standard 993 muffler.
The difference is that the 993 RS muffler is missing the internal by-pass tube, which makes them even quiter than the standard 993 muffler.
The reason for this is because in order for the 3.8 RS and the 3.8 motor kit to pass Europe's drive by noise regulation it has to be quieter, since now the motor is bigger so the muffler must muffle more noise.
Below is an internal picture of a standard 993 muffler and a motor sound muffler, Porsche increase the diameter of the by-pass tube to make the motor sound muffler sound a little louder.

Not posting before my morning coffee again. Yep, I remember making the above post with the muffler part numbers.

It was the chap who has cut up hundreds if not thousands of 993 mufflers, Robin Sun:

This was written by a friend who used to build exhaust systems for 993.
"From memory the Carrera exhaust has a small connection pipe between the inlet pipe and outlet pipe inside the muffler. The RS muffler has no connection pipe. Other than that the tube size is the same."
