Default help....

Just joined the list and got my new girlfriend up to Alaska. 98 C4S, arctic silver, supple leather, HR springs, FVD exhaust, etc.... Loving it.

Here's the problem-- paid $300.00 for PPI at Champion in Jacksonville, Florida. Seemed high, but wanted a unbiased set of eyes on it. Also had it taken to Seller's mechanic (Mossport Automotive) to check it out-and fix some minor problems which had been identified.

Flew down and had the time of my life blazing her across country.

I get the car to Alaska and take it to my trusty mechanic. We immediately notice a fair sized oil leak. Didn't seem to be loosing much on the way across the country.....but pretty obvious to anyone who actually looks. Oil is leaking from cylinder base gasket.

Have searched posts... Is a head retorque likely to help? Thoughts? I'll keep driving it, but am just bummed and would like to fix it if cost-benefit analysis makes any sense.

Otherwise the car exceeds my expectations...

Will post some pictures soon.

Glad to be a member of such a cool group of folks...

Rocker cover gasket leaks are fairly common on our cars. Is that where you are seeing it from?

Sherman,

Sorry to hear about your oil leak. I too understand that the rocker cover gaskets are prone to failure.

Hope to see you in Anchorage after the 4th!

WAIT WAIT!

You actually drove the car from Florida to Alaska? ..on those nasty gravel roads? ...and avoided a cracked windshield or other rock chip damage?

...we did the chicago -Alaska drive 2 years ago in an Infiniti G20 sedan and had to replace a headlamp and got lots of nasty pits in the windshield.. and I also ended up repainting the hood after all the truck encounters passing the other way

*(or have they done more paving since then?)

Sherman,

If oil is leaking from the cylinder base, I wouldn't bother fixing it if it were just a dribble. Of course only you can determine what's a "tolerable" leak, but from what I've been told, this is fairly common, especially among higher-mileage cars, and is not remedied with simply retorquing. I'd clean up the area and make sure it's really from the cylinder base as the valve covers are most often the culprit of oil leaks.

i actually shipped it from seattle to anchorage. alaskan highway is now paved virtually the whole way. however it is not free of slow moving, rock spraying trucks, and poorly driven rv's....didn't feel like dealing so i shipped it.

rocker covers not leaking. i cleaned up the oil really well, went for a 10 minute drive and you could oil seeping from the lower gasket at the cylinder base. have read that this is a metal gasket.

Anyone retorqued their heads?

Thanks...
