CarFax does not recognize the letter "O" in VINS It thinks it is a grey market car. The VIN is correct, CarFax is incorrect

The "O" in the manufacturer's code "WPO" is a letter. The "0" in the sequential run number is a number.

Carfax will run a VIN with the letter "O" and/or the number "0" with no problem.

VIN decoder link.

Sorry Dan 96C2 but I just ran my VIN on my 95 993 C2 in CarFax and got the following response:

The letters "I", "O" and "Q" never appear in a VIN.

The VIN must be exactly 17 characters in length.

The Carfax database contains information for cars manufactured from 1981 through the present.

Try it again substituting the number "0" for the letter "O" in the "WPO." Should work.

A "bad" CarFax is more reliable than a "good" CarFax - e.g, if report is "salvage title" it probably is correct, but a "clean title" report doesn't mean it wasn't a "washed" salvage title. CarFax is not a substitute for good, old fashioned detective work like back tracking the title through to the original owner.

You can get a free "limited" CarFax at http://www.carfax.com/ (look at the bottom of the page for "FREE SERVICES"). A complete CarFax will cost you a few bucks or you can try to get your friendly dealer who subscribes to run it for you.

Enjoy your new ride, welcome to the Board & watch out for those cabbies
