Question Headlight problem

Inside the headlight, the area that the low beam bulb sits in has become damaged. The little molded lip where the clip sits is broken and the bulb isn't secured by the clip very well. Can the grey cylindrical mount , where the bulb sits be purchased seperately? Does anyone have a part #?

Unfortunately jg, the answer is no - AFAIK, internal headlight parts are not available separately. However, from what you describe, it may be repairable. Do you have a pic/sketch so we can visualize the problem? Is it the catch for the wire bulb hold-down that broke?

BTW, how'd it get damaged - or is that story too embarrassing?

Nope, you can't buy that bit seperately.

You can buy lenses, levelling motors and rear covers, but for any of the main part of the light, its a whole light.

The bit you are talking about is the grey cast bulb mount, right ??
These are quite soft and can be bent quite easily. You best bet is to try to get a second hand light, or splash for a complete new one

Yes, it is the little catch for the wire hold down. The problem came to my attention when I changed a dead bulb. The car was purchased 2 months ago and was in great condition; no evidence of collision or damage. When I changed both bulbs I noticed that the mounts in both lens were somewhat bent and the right was chipped. Everything else looks to be perfect. I have not contacted previous owner as it is my problem now. The mount seems to be made of some lightweight non-solderable material. I imagine I could do a repair with a formable epoxy. I will post pictures in a day or so in case anyone has any ideas.

My initial thoughts for a repair are:
(1) From my experience with my HID mods to that assembly, epoxy doesn't hold well - high temp, expansion/contraction cycles, etc.
(2) If enough of the catch remains, you can (very carefully) cut a small upward groove to catch the wire using a Dremel tool (great excuse to buy one if you don't already have one).
(3) The gray aluminum is soft & somewhat brittle. However, it is easily drilled. Buy a #4-40 drill bit & tap (tool to cut threads in the hole), plus a few #4-40 machine screws, at a decent hardware store (if there are any left). Drill & tap a screw hole & insert a screw w/small washer to catch the hold-down wire. Secure w/Loctite. Should work - assuming you can live with a jerry rigged Porsche Hope this is of help.

Or, maybe someone else has a better idea.

BTW, the wire catch generally looks like it's bent. My guess is the prior owner tried to straighten it and it broke off.

Not sure if exactly this will help, but here goes:

I lost the little paper clip like retainer about 6 months ago when changing a bulb. Obviously not avilable. Went to home depot and bought a picture hanging kit with the bendable wire in it. Wrapped the wire over the 2 posts and over the back of the bulb, pulled tight and twisted it on itself.

That was 6 months ago and I have forgotten about it till your post. As I said, not sure if that will help, but maybe there is enough of a piece sticking up that will hold the wire without you drilling or changing anything.

Might be worth a try first.

Not directly relevant to the post but a good place for this info...there is a technical service bulletin on the headlight bracket....below is the copy of that TSB issued on 10/7/99.

Headlamp Bracket Deformity

Vehicle Type:
911 Carrera (993), 911 Turbo (993) without Litronic headlight option

Model Year:
911 Carrera, as of 1995 (S)
911 Turbo, as of 1996 (T)

Concern:
Bracket for H1 headlamp (low beam) becoming deformed from heat.

Information:

The H1 lamp for low beam operation can become loose if the mounting area becomes deformed from heat. A new H1 lamp spring clip and retaining bracket are available, should this occur.

A repair kit, consisting of a stainless-steel spring clip and a modified retaining bracket should be installed, either as a preventative measure or a repair for deformity or warpage.

Parts Info:
Part Number Description
000 043 204 28 Repair kit, with 1 spring clip and 1 retaining bracket

Thanks ,
this TSB is most helpful.
I would be willing to bet that most 993 low beams suffer from this.
