993 4S glass/seal work
I need to replace the windshield on my 1997 993 4S. The prior owner had it replaced in FL and they did a terrible job, not OEM glass, missing inside rubber frame, wrong bonding, wrong external seal; in short: all wrong.
I am based in Durham, NC and reached out to a premier restoration/garage in the area, but was told they do not do glass/seal work and outsource theirs.
Have any of you had luck with national glass replacement/instal providers (e.g. SafeLite), or have a recommendation for someone good in North Carolina?
Best,
Luftzug

Hi Luftzug,
Something to keep in mind:
As an experiment I recently researched where 993 Porsche branded verses manufacturer branded windshield glass comes from for a 993.
It turns out this is easy to do because to be sold in the US automotive glass must be labeled with a US DOT number that identifies the specific factory of origin and also the country of origin. Turns out Porsche branded glass with the Triangle-P logo comes from the same two factories in Germany as all aftermarket windshields for our cars. The only difference is the added Porsche branded logo on the Porsche dealer sold glass. So any premium price one pays for the dealer part is purely to get the logo.

I would search out a Porsche experienced body shop for this. Even the dealers contract out to local jobbers who will short cut the installation process resulting in the dreaded squeaky windshield. (Search on that for tales of woe)
if they quote you less than $600-700 for install hang up.
You should also be ready for some rust repair while you’re in there and maybe a couple extra hours to clean out the RTV sealant and rope that may be in there.
this is not your routine Honda Accord windshield install.
