Where on a 993 is the OBDII connector located? (either left or right hand drive)
Also, if I invest in the equipment to communicate with the DME with the OBDII connector, just what would I be able to achieve apart from reading fault codes?
Am I right in thinking that I would need OBDII equipment using the ISO protocol?
Also, what version of Motronic is the 993 DME?

The port is in the driver's footwell, located on the center console. At least for US cars. It may be switched for ROW cars. There's a small black plastic cover that says "OBD" on it. Just pop it off and the connector is there.
Here's a web site of a odb2 software reader manufactuer. He has better docs on what you can/can't see: http://www.obd-2.com

Thanks Jeff,
I will have a poke around in the morning and check its in the same place on a row 993.
I will also check out the link... is there anything that the Porsche version of an OBD tool would do which an aftermarket one would not??

Got a gorgeous one for Audis; works great. Great support also.

Haven't seen one that will work on the OBD-I system on my '95 993.

The key is whether your 993 is really OBDII or not. In the U.S., only the '96 and
later comply, i.e. were required to, to the ISO 9141-2 standard. I've seen some '96
993s which don't and fail the emissions test because of non-compliance. They must
have a waiver from CARB here in California to pass. Some dealers have told owners
that they must buy new updated DME units. This is rare, though.

Thanks Ray, Loren & Paul,
Mine is a 97 with an OBDII connector (I know that now thanks to Jeff's discription of where to find it)
Now I am just shopping around for a interface and see what I can find.
Anyone know what version of Motronic the 993 DME is?
I am on a waiting list for a 993 workshop manual now (official one), but I am told it will be up to 6 to 12 months before I will have it. Anyone out there have the unofficial CD one I can borrow (almost like a pre-emptive backup almost making it legal) until the real deal arrives??

Is the vagcom compatible with our Porkers? I own an Audi TT Roadster too and I have a vagcom already!

Monique,
VAG-com doesn't work with Porsche's. The VW/Audi products use a different protocol. I also have a TT and vag-com.
