David,
Are you mounting the unit on the windshield with suction cups? or did you devise a more permanent mounting solution?

My V1 is hardwired to the fuse box. Very clean install. Mounted with the LARGE suction cups on right side of rear view mirror, has never fallen in both extreem +115F heat or +26F cold.

Remote dispaly mounted in ash tray (still closes for added security) with enough room left to hold my StarTac.

V-1 is worth more than gold. Seriously. For what it weighs and what it can save you versus what it costs there is no reason not to use it. It's just like a credit card or firearm.....you don't have to use it but it's nice to know it's available. Besides if it goes off when you are obeying the law you are comforted in the knowledge your humble and caring public servants are close by for your protection.

Mark
I'll join the others endorsing the V1. IMO, until a competitor offers directional arrows, no other detector comes close for real world effectiveness.

My install (& others) which has worked flawlessly for about 3 yrs is detailed in this thread from 11/01:
<a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=001149#000004" target="_blank">V 1 Installation</a>

The pros of a detector are obvious. The cons are (1) developing a false sense of security & ignoring "rules" for fast, ticket free driving, (2) if stopped you're less likely to get a break from the police, (3) if a following driver can see your detector (esp at night), you may have a high speed tailgater, (4) attractive to thieves, and (5) false alarms are a nuisance.

Thanks to all who replied with advice, experience and install tips. Seems like I have to give it a try. Mark

p.s. My wife will be pleased to hear that she made such a wise gift selection.

Eventually I would like to do a semipermanent mount by either screwing in the bracket, or better yet building a box which would fit above the mirror (I'd lose my interior light) as the car is a cab and right now the V1 is not very stealthy with the top down.

I also have the remote display in the ashtray and am still looking for a good place to mount the remote volume/on-off switch...any suggestions appreciated.

I love my V1. Concealed and hardwired in a cabrio (unfortunately it's not a PCar). <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

My V1 never stuck with the suction cups ABOVE the rear view mirror. I wanted it up there since it is out of the way (I have the remote indicator mounted in front of my tach) both for driving purposes and as theft-bait. But inevitably it would come loose, pulling out wiring as it came crashing down. I tried using the larger suction cups, but they don't fit well. The only thing I didn't try was double-sided tape.

I've been mounting mine from the visor. Would love to find a way to mount it above the rear view mirror reliably.

Optimo - is the main unit hidden in a box or hidden in the rear brakelight or where?? I'm still looking for a place/way to conceal mine.

Kevin - I've never had a problem with my V1 falling down...I cleaned the window prior w/ rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt/grease/etc. Also, my V1 slightly rests on the rt side of my rearview mirror so I think that might help keep it up longer.

I stumbled across this <a href="http://www.ecisbmw.com/product_files/accessories/V1%20Display.htm" target="_blank">Stealth Rear View Mirror Display</a> for V1's.
<img src="http://www.ecisbmw.com/product_files/accessories/v1%20mirror_lg.jpg" alt=" - " />

I have no idea how well it performs, build quality, etc - but the install looks great!

Mine is a '96, and there is very little access above the mirror.

Kevin - My cab is a 98. I don't have any pics but there is enough space between the top of the right side of the mirrow and the bottom of the sunvisor to place the V1. The sunvisor can still be parially lowered although of course not positioned fully forward againt the glass.

What I'd like to ideally do is fabricate a plastic/plexi "box" and mount it against the roof above the mirror. There seems to be just enough space to put it there but I'd lose the interior light unless I relocated it to the bootom of the box somehow. I think an interior/upholstory shop could probably fabricate this and cover it to match.

The only problem is that you have to mount the acutal unit somewhere, so it negates the clean look of the rear view mirror display.

Here is the idea I had for a support for the weight in the rear of the V1 such that the suction cups aren't carrying the entire weight. This was drawn up in 3 minutes using MS Paint so you designers out there take it easy on me!
