"Does anyone know if the control unit for an '87 Cab is the same as this one for the 993?"

It is not the same. There are rebuilt units. Do a Google search ("Cab Top Control Unit").

"can anyone please clarify how to get to this chip?"

What chip?

"How to get to the control unit/chip/module whatever you want to call it discussed in this thread."

As I said, do a Google search for "Cab Top Control Unit". Rebuilt units are readily available at about
$300 in all three versions; 911, 964, 993.

I have a 87 911 Cab, my Roof Controller went. I checked for Cold Solder Joints.. none. I have looked high and low to either have this rebuilt or buy a rebuilt or new. Sent it out to BBA to repair, they diagnosed it, charge me and said "can't". Now I'm looking for a rebuilt or new and can't find one ANYWHERE! I am told it is not interchangable with the 993. What do I do, where do I go? It's Fall in New England and I gotta fix my Baby! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Folks!!! Joe

You can also try used parts like www.dcauto.com or all L.A. Dismantler .

Who needs an electric top?
When I had a BMW 328 convertible.... rather than pay $1200 for a new controller, I converted it to manual operation using the parts from the european model. I threw away ten pounds of motors, wiring loom, switches and other junk. Suggest you look into whether this can be done. I bought a 993 coupe because I didn't want the problems you are now having.

Great for the resale value!

You can also use the Porsche part number (993 618 313 00) when doing a Google search
to find sources for the cab top ECU.

It is no advantage to have an unreliable and overly complex system to avoid a simple manual operation. The buyer of my 328 agreed with me. The fewer electric motors on my car the happier I am. Loren, I wonder if you would also like Porsche to replace the cable operated gas flap with a control unit and motor.... maybe they already did this. One more reason not to buy a newer model.
