Default Sound deadening interior

I have a couple extra rolls of Second Skin Damplifier laying around my garage. Where would be the most impactful areas of my 993 interior in which to use this material? I’d love to cut down on interior noise a bit. Guessing wheelwells like most cars but figured I’d ask for anyone who has actually done it on these cars.

Hi ACR,
My opinion is that the 993 has a good bit of effective sound-dampening material already. Most folks replace the existing material in the car because the closed-cell foam the OE insulation is made from has considerable weight whereas the aftermarket stuff is designed to be as light as possible. If your car has the original insulation and engine compartment blanket in place adding more will not likely quiet things down to any meaningful extent. If your car seems loud consider checking the door and window seals. Also, one can consider changes to the exhaust and tieing down things that rattle and make noise such as any aftermarket wiring added to the car. One can also consider removing stuff from the storage pockets and the glove box that can make a bit of noise some fine disturbing.

This thread on my RS Carpet Install may be of help.

The stock insulation in these cars is 25 years old, and pales in comparison to the new materials out there. I lined the entire cabin with Dynamat Lite, and laid MLV (with closed cell foam where it counts) on top. I run with Sportcats in concert with Fister II’s, yet it’s remarkably quiet in the cabin with the windows up. Your car will be significantly quieter when this is done properly.

I think critical placement would be the floorboards, wheel wells, firewall in backseat, and the door skins. Lots of noise comes from the door, and Andy is right on suggesting to replace the plastic door skin. I use a simple plastic sheeting, adhered with 3M 77 spray glue.

I did this. Did the entire back half of the car from the footwell back and the package shelf. Dynamat.

I used Foxman's thread when I did my interior rebuild. Good stuff in there. I did the whole floor and rear firewall in dynamat extreme, and LMV backed closed cell sound deadening.

Great thread - certainly something I will investigate on my 993 as noise (wind and engine) on highway is difficult for me to bear in this car.

Watson, foam ear plugs. Cheap, easy and reduces sound by about 30 dB .

That’s a good solution for one ear. Legally you can’t have headphones or earplugs over both ears in states like CA and MA.

I thought the law was written for headphones, no mention of ear plugs. The earplugs only reduces some noise, not eliminate it. They cut down the sound on a constant noise, like when I use the riding mower. I was joking about the solution.
