Hi All, 1996 C2, ~42k miles, all original non HiFi system. I am getting a crackle at mid volume from my front speakers. I have the base system, the larger speaker low on the door and smaller one higher up, but not the box with the two speakers and I do not have an amplifier under the seat. As both channels were affected, but not the rears, I assumed the radio was at fault. The radio was a ~2005 Becker Monza and I swapped in a known good Becker Mexico Pro and the problem persisted.

I am a bit stumped by a problem downstream of the radio seemingly affecting both front speakers from a system without an amp, unless both front speakers are failing together.

Anyone have any similar experiences or thoughts before I start exploring behind the panels?

if they're the original speakers, id guess they are failing. you might want to try reconing them.

The original speakers were supplied by Nokia (the acclaimed high end audio manufacturer - not) and after 26+ years will have started to disintegrate. I suggest you source a set of Musway MQ62 6.5" coax speakers (Gert at Carnewall sells them) for the fronts. They are larger at 6.5" but only require 3mm to be removed from the door card which is easy with the aid of a Dremel saw blade. They are coaxial so cover the full frequency range but you can still connect the existing tweeters as they have their own crossover built in.



So Musway speakers connected to existing wiring spade connectors, existing tweeters soldered to the Musway terminals observing correct polarity. Makes for a clean install with excellent sound.

Alternatively you can buy new Nokia speakers from your Porsche dealer. Getting the grills off your original speakers so you can access the mounting screws can be quite a challenge and if you damage them they are expensive to replace. Requires trim removal tools a large screwdriver and brute force. Musway comes with speaker grills and after fitting you would be challenged to spot any difference (the Musway sticker peels off).

I re-coned/refurbished all my original 993 speakers at an audio speaker shop for a nominal cost, as the OEM speakers increased substantially, in some cases from $20 five years ago to over $200 now......OEMs are getting harder to find.......

Hi Wings,
I would not bother reconing the existing speakers.
Most aftermarket speakers will resolve the issue.
Also, exact replacment speakers are available new,

I replaced all my speakers a few years back with OEMs from the dealer. Can't remember what it cost but It wasn't too bad. Mine were all desintgrating and falling apart.
