Post CHOICE 993 OR 996

I have the option of giving up my 96 c2 cab tip, for a 99 c2 6 speed. Both have very low miles, and look great. Which one should i go with? Please help, need pros and cons.

I think that you are asking the choir here, Tom..

I'd suggest you drive the 996 and then decide.

Jeff

Btw, is there any particular reason you want to switch cars?? Since both have low miles and look great.

Anythings you guys do not like about the 996, besides it look like a boxster, I would love a tt993, but im only 24, and want something to look forward to.

I won't bash 996's but I will share a story with you from this morning.

I was waiting outside of Pacific Porsche in my 97 c4s and a guy pulled up next to me in a 2002 TT. The first thing he said was "nice car, want to trade?" He was joking for sure...or so I thought. He went on to explain that in less than 2,000 miles he has gone through over 3 qts of oil, 2 windshields and numerous other small items too long to list. I guess Porsche was bringing in an engineer and rep to take the car for a few days. I thought the guy might be a little picky, but when he picked up a little peice of red plastic (bulb cover from the door panel)that had just fallen off I had to agree that maybe this car was cursed.

I would trade the guy in a NY minute...too bad it's all under warranty. Wonder if Porsche will consider it a lemon? This happens to every carmaker, but it was a little scary that it was a 120k TT.

Tom,
You haven't yet said WHY you are thinking about trading. Are you looking for more HP? A manual transmission? Easier to work with cab top? A cab that is a little bigger inside and a little safer (built in rollbars)? What is the trade difference? If it was very little and you like the 996, why not.

Maybe a one off, but i went on a track day the other week. There was a brand new 996 targa on the track too (done 3500 miles). Whilst my 993 never put a foot wrong, the 996 had a heavily smoking engine after 3 sessions - guess it could just be overfilled oil but didn't look to clever...

What about depreciation?

I know some of you guys have enough spare cash to clear the 3rd world dept but even so....that would be the first thing I thought of.

The 993 is a safer bet for sure and if its not done many miles why change it?

With the stock market plumeting as it did, my 993TT was one of my better investments. If I could say that my portfolio only dropped 10-15% ( comparable to the depreciation of my car in 1 year ), I'd be absolutely extatic.

Everything is relative...

Hi there and good day!!! Cobra-what you will find in this board is they are very passionate about their 993's and so there opinions are biased. What I rcommend is drive it first and then decide if the 996 is the right car for you. I have a pre '99 build(10/98) 996 and love it as much as ones who love the 993. I have been to several events and has been driven hard and have not had any major problems. The '99 imho is the simplest of all the years-no PSM(only have mechanical TRACTION CONTROL as an option) and no drive-by-wire throttle(no E-gas) and the coupe versions are lite. I would recommend full leather interior plus litronic if you decide on one. Good luck and enjoy whichever car you want. Regards. Mike

Hre or Fiske would make great addition to the car since they are liteweight and looks great and good for tracking. Been debating changing but have the 18's(turbo rims) already so waiting til it's worn down before upgrading. Sounds like a good one Cobra-you can always upgrade to 18's anytime. Regards. Mike

Here is a picture of the Fikse's. They are great looking wheels but a b$tch to clean. If you are putting them on a narrowbody 993, I suggest asking Fikse to use 8 1/2" inner rim and 1 1/2" outer rim on the rear wheels (18x10). Their suggested configuration: 8" inner and 2" outer rim halves caused some rubbing problems on the fender lip, especially after I installed PSS-9's and lowered the car. I had the wheels rebuilt to the specs above and they are a perfect fit.
