Post What happened (OT)

to the Monaco Grand Prix on Speedvision? It just plain wasn't there- at least in my area. Are certain races not being shown? Anyone know why?

I believe it was because ABC bought the rights to certain F1 races. Monaco, Candian and US GP will all be on ABC. Speed will re broadcast them at a later date though.

ABC will also have the Italian Grand Prix.

Replay of Monaco on Speedvision will be next Sunday, June 2nd at 8:00pm.

I thought ABC's coverage was just awful. Danny Sullivan had absolutely nothing relevant to say and the guy calling the race was highly irritating!

But for those of us who don't get SpeedVision, it was nice to have it on ABC, even with the less than perfect commentating....

While I will agree it was probably nice for those who can’t get speed to see the race on ABC. For those of us with speed it was beyond pathetic. No formation lap, barely start coverage, virtually no pit coverage, HIGHLY irritating announcer with no knowledge of F1, worthless fluff spots with D. Sullivan in the pits, attempting to talk up drama when there was none, no actual sounds from the race (like audio from the tunnel ), no real podium footage, and last but definitely not least...Edited Out Laps!!!!!!!

ok I feel a little better. I can’t wait to “watch” all the Canadian and Italian GPs. Well at least I am going to the US GP so I will get to see all the laps.

Saw only part of the Monaco GP. I'll catch the replay on Speedvision. The abc coverage was pretty much par for the course...
For an exercise in real pain try to watch them cover a CART race. Jeeze... It makes you want to scream!

Actually, Speedvision or Speed isn't much better. Nascar races have all sorts of cool shots and data displays in real time. ALMS has displays of gforces , brakes and throttle. Cart has the helmet cam. But Bernie E. gives only in-car camera shots. Since there is no passing to watch, you would think we'd at least get some cooler pictures and data. Now don't get me wrong, I still enjoy F-1, but the coverage is not impressive.

As it turned out, I had a friend over to watch the race -- he's a big F1 fan, and I was testing a ReplayTV unit.

ABC showed the grid, with a countdown clock showing 3:30 (three & a half minutes remaining). Next thing you know, the camera shot changes, all the starter lights turn red, and the race starts! We were confused as to what we were looking at - the recon lap or the race.

Thanks to the handy-dandy ReplayTV gizmo, I just re-wound the live broadcast & watched the rest of the race on mpeg-2 delay. Was also fun for freezing the broadcast during a pit stop to get a closer look at the old tires coming off one car's tires, and replaying a crash.

Point taken about Speed coverage. Still, I find the abc personalities to be particularly odeious in their announcing skills.

Yes, NASCAR does have some wicked camera angles. I also particularily like the "Flying Name Tags" that are attached to each car. I think though, that some of the camera angles happen only on ovals. Look at the camera coverage of NASCAR road courses (Sears Point, et. al.). Not appreciable better (IMHO)
Cheers,
Chris

I find it interesting that ABC chooses Monaco as a favored F1 venue. Although it has wonderful history and an exotic setting, it's one of the more boring races in the F1 series due to the almost total lack of passing. Add the lackluster commentary and disjointed camera / sound coverage, and ABC probably bored the pants off any US viewer not already addicted to F1.

Anir, you're right on the money here - this year's race has to have been one of the most boring GPs ever! After the excellent qualifying session, I had high expectations of the race, but apart from a touch of adrenalin when the McLaren pitted, it was boring, boring, boring!! If SchueyM gets any further ahead in the championship, his fire will go right out, we'll have to look elsewhere than #1 or #2 for the actual racing. Witness Button at least having a crack (!) at Panis for a position in the points.

Despite Ferrari's cynical move in Austria, it was a much better race! But the Monaco birds are rather nice, eh?

Hoping for better, cheers, Maurice.

That’s because they chose to devote more air time to the 30 minute Red Bull commercial that preceded the event. Where oh where is last year’s announcing team?! They made the F1 races seem like a chess match played out with 800 HP technological marvels, while other announces make the races seem like a professional wrestling match.

Thumbs down

I agree--ABC's coverage of the Monaco GP was terrible and the race wasn't exciting either. Another win for the pole sitter with little passing. The only highlight was the when Coulthard pitted to see if he would be passed by Schumacher.
The action this year hasn't been with Ferrari Williams or McLaren. It's with Sauber, BAR, Jag and the other teams.

I thought ABC's coverage of Indy was much betterand more action the the F1 event.

Todd:

FYI

Pole sitter was JPM who got beaten to the first turn by DC and ran in 2nd place until his motor blew on lap 47.
