Default rust ?

one last question(s)-
the TT im looking at has lived near the ocean in the Southeast.
3 things have come up:

1) slight bubbles under the paint (1-2 inches) where the metal meets the windshield rubber at the base of the front windshield. PCNA has agreed to fix this under the 10yr non-corrosion warranty. They will also replace the windshield (nice people ) They claim water seeped into/under the rubber seal. Is this normal?

2) rusted bolt in interior where back jump seats fold

3) rusted plate inside trunk on left side above the left front wheel tower.

Given the above, is there anything else i should check that is prone to rust / corrosion? any engine parts? I already had a PPI and everything showed well except for the above. Obviously i dont care about fixing a small bolt and plate and PCNA will fix #1, but, what else should i double check?
Sorry to sound parnoid.
thanks,
r

Windshield seal rust is common ... there is a TSB on it. Dirt collects under the seal and the paint bubbles.

Pretty common for the jump seats bolt to rust, too ... my old 930 had that problem.

As far as under the front lid, you might want to pull up the carpeting and check your battery area; if there's white powder you might have some acid in there. If there is, neutralize it with a baking soda and water solution, then rinse it out thoroughly and dry it. Make sure your battery is vented to outside air; the fumes can cause metal to corrode. Take a close look at your spare wheel for any rust.

Too normal, I'm afraid. My never-been-out-of California car (okay, it's been to Nevada) had a base of the windshield rust bubble repaired under warranty, back in '98. Now I have another base of the windshield rust bubble (perhaps in the same exact place). Pisser.

Also check engine heat shields - they are made of paper and can corrode out pretty quickly; don't forget the ones over the CATS!

I had the pain blister problem on my rear screen - seems to be a design fault.

Does anyone have a .pdf of or link to the TSB on the windshield rust problem? My 993 has it on both front/rear windows. Not sure how much resistance I'll meet from the local P-dealer in getting them to repair it. Thanks.

FWIW, I got very little resistance when Porsche repaired mine under warranty. Basically, they just verified the rust wasn't the result of (for example) a previous collision repair, then authorized the repair.

TSBs are 69511 (10/95) and 59501 (1/95).........and I have similer situation to Randall's on front lower corners of windscreen .....fixed base of right in 99 and now same thing has happened at base of left ...........local Zone rep has denied my claim (this car has been fixed before) and dlr would maintain not their fault (guess I'd kinda agree)....appealing to Customer Commitment.

Rust? Did someone mention the "r" word here?? Rust - sure - I've seen it first hand - in many forms on my 993.....

Ditto what everone said on the front pillar....

Check the rear window edges as well - bottom left especially - but, all around...

Check the door sill - by the seam where the rocker mates before the door jamb

Check the clamps/hardware on the engine underside - mostly in the heating/ducting area

Check up OVER the transmission - in the body cavity.

Remove the RIGHT rear wheel liner (covering the oil tank) - and look for holes in the tank.....

Check the rear stand offs for the valences/skirts. There should be TWO per side. In my case - I had "0" per side. I now have "1" per side....

Check the heat shields (one per muffler and one over the cat). Those rust pretty quickly. I think I used to have heat shields on my mufflers - as I remember seeing a screw where the rest of the shields used to be...????

In the front....

DROP the front pan - and look at the connectors/lines into the PS rack;

Remove the front wheel liners (L&R) and look at the bolts/mount points for the A/C and oil cooler - and the front bumper pad bolts (front/quarter valences/skirts)....

Inside the car....

Remove the driver/passenger side sound deadener - and check in the far forward areas of the floor pan.....

Hmmmm - that's a short list

HTH!!

Talking PCNA and Rust

993 cars have a 10 year Corrosion Protection plan from Porsche Cars North America. In the process of attemping to replace a rear windscreen squeek on my 993, my tech found a rust spot in the lower left corner (Driver Side of the Car). I was sent to the Pioneer Porsche (San Diego) authorized Porsche paint and body shop, West Coast Specialities in San Diego for an assessment.

West Coast Specialities checked out the rust spot and sent a report to PCNA who rapidly agreed to repair the rust spot.

So John, why isn't your car covered under this?

I don't think they'd know what parts to start replacing - as some had "vanished" from "rust to dust"

Hey - that's an idea - maybe I could get them to send me a new 993 - or 997??!??

Seriously - the PO, in his "infinite wisdom" - had the whole car re-sprayed (albeit in the original factory color) as he dorked the RF valence/lower bumper pad - and the body shop was a small local shop (designated by his insurance co. - which is a whole other topic...). They actually did a pretty good job - BUT - it wasn't approved nor done at a PCNA dealership or on their approval, so it voided the corrision warranty....

I guess - I'm OK with that, as my 993 was a $16K purchase which I knew had a few "warts", and given the neglect by the PO - I also wouldn't feel "right" asking PCNA to back the POs neglect and stupidity....

I had my "around windshield" rust repaired under 10-year rust warranty by a local dealer. They had to get an OK from a regional rep, but it was free of charge to me.

Now, I think that teh fact that MA is a mandatory full glass coverage state and they got $1100 out of my insurance company for glass replacement had something to do with it, but they did fix the rust under warranty.

After the 'R' problem with mine (rear screen, heat shields) I had the car checked over by my wrench and Dynatrol'd. Blasted worms get everywhere!

Talking John, the Rug Merchant....

John writes above, "I'm OK with that, as my 993 was a $16K" purchase. What a deal!!! You could part out a 993 and get more than $16,000. What an incredible buy....John, you bandit!
