I generally wave to Porsches and other sports cars when encountered on my typical twisties route. But the problem with the flash is that many people, including myself, view that as a signal of a cop ahead. If it's a Porsche giving the flash, it's very likely just a friendly "wave"....but what if it's not. I can't afford to take that chance and therfore must slow down for the next mile or so, and deal with the paranoia for the remainder of my drive... which kinda takes the fun out of it.

I flash and/or wave. Response rate varies greatly from day to day.

Yep, always flash - problem is ,though, most Boxters never return the gesture - perhaps they don't know what a real Porsche looks like?

I usually flash for 993 'sand prior generation 911's. Seems 996's are not aware of flash, and as emilios alludes, the odds for a 986 to flash or even acknowledge is near zero.

I always flash/wave when I encounter a Porsche car. The majority of Porsche owners respond in kind if their car is a 993 or older. It is getting to the point now where 986 and 996 owners never return the gesture. It is a nice tradition that we should keep alive.

I am spoiled from my pre-marital days riding a sport bike. 49 out of 50 riders coming the opposite direction will take their left hand off the grip and acknowledge you. Of course, this doesn't include the poseurs on the the Harleys.

In my 993, only one out of 20 will acknowledge me in one form or another. The thing that irritates me the most is the ones who look straight at me and then pretend they didn't see me. This happens all of the time, even the 993s.

I hate to say it, but in general Porsche drivers suck in this regard.

Terry,

Bet you could deduct a significant percentage if the car has dirty wheels!

Terry - that was brilliant humor. You made me laugh out loud.

I would add that Allen has a good point too. If you flash someone where I live, it's 75% chance that he's alerting you to the multiple radar traps that are EVERYWHERE in my area. Small streets, highways - everywhere. The flash is useless in my area due to the speed trap factor. PLUS, you can actually get pulled over and possibly ticketed for alerting other drivers of a speed trap here by flashing the warning. SICK! Maryland IS a police state.

Hi --

I always wave. And like with bikes, some return the wave. Others don't.

Have not noticed any trends here though. Have gotten return waves from all types of p-cars, and no-waves from all types.

Keep waving!

I always wave but get a response only about 1/2 the time. I find this unusual because when I owned a corvette it was close to 100% and the same for my sportbike.

when I lived in Atlanta (alpharetta actually) and drove a boxster s I got return waves/flashes froma very small % and I tried to wave or flash all Porsches, including Cayenne's.

Here I got none at first in the 993 but since there are only 7-8 Porsches in the area I now get return waves from all but 1 in a Guards Red 996 Cab. Now they all 'Know" me and return the wave. So far I have yet to see another 993 in the area. There is an SC Targa, 2 Boxsters, 3 Boxster S's, 2 996 Cab's and a few Cayennes that I have not bothered to try and count or differentiate. AFAIK I am the only 993 on the Eastern Shore of Mobile.

I know I wave to every Porsche I see from 914's to GT2's. I am starting to see that the wave/flash is slowly dying out these days. It is sad, when I was little my Dad and I would be riding around in the Porsches and when ever we saw a on coming Porsche we would get so excited and wave and would always get the wave back. I miss those days, I just am starting to think that more people are buying a Porsche as a nice car and they are not buying them for the reasons we all do. Just my opinion however. Best wishes - Jay Gratton

I whole heartedly agree! I started this thread last week:

Maybe we should cross-post this to the other boards & spread the word?

I have to agree with Terry as for the response rate. I flash every p car I encounter. Sometimes I reach for the flash stalk but stop myself when I am driving my other car and see a P car owner who has his/her priorities in order and is driving theirs while I am not.

I always flash and/or wave at another 993.

I don't tend to do it to 996s or Boxsters because there are so many of them around here, it would be simpler to just leave my headlights on. They are usually too busy talking on a cellphone to notice anyway.
