Berkley,

So there were regular turbos made (not Turbo S cars as only 182 of those were made) and these 1998 Turbos did not come to the US?

So it would appear....I've read before that the 993 and 996 were being produced and sold at the same time for non-US markets....the '98 CS I sold had a special order paint option that is not shown for the 993 but is for the '98 996

I have never heard of or read of a '98 993TT S model but Porsche has been known to use up extra parts....will have to watch Mr. Sloans inventory page

I recently bought a '98 Arctic Silver/Black Targa. The car had no signs of water infiltration from the Targa top when I got it and we have had some deluge rain days in Los Angeles in the last month -- no leaks. My bet is that Porsche worked out the leak problems between 1996 when the first glass roof Targa was introduced in the U.S. and 1998.

I too have read in several places that the Targas were built on the Cab body. I still have and am selling a 1995 Cab (see Rennlist Classified). As I look at them both side by side, the '98T rear flares look the same, and the outside wheel to outside wheel dimension is the same as my narrow body '95 Cab.

IMHO, a 1998T in the low 40s is an exceptional buy. Good luck, Mark.

...mhhh... I stand corrected, I thought I'd seen a 98 Turbo S but all those on Sloan's pages are '97s and Pano ads are for '97s as well..

I have a 97 Targa and have only good experiences so far. Not problems with the top at all, no noise, rattles etc..
I was originally only looking for a C2 or C2s but came across this one. myporsche.peachhost.com and I couldn't be happier. The roof has most of the benefits of a convertible but still drives and has the lines of the coupe. It also opens the car up with light. I am sure there are no wide body Targas out there. Good luck.

Question

Berkley,

Where is this "Porsche Red Book"? I just bought a 98 C2S and would be very interested in production and import figures for it as well.

A highly entertaining $11.95 purchase.
Any time someone post a question about MY, production numbers, models, options, colors, serial numbers, whatever, you can hear hundreds of rennlisters scrambling for their red books.

The targa or any targa type car can indeed become too hot and too bright depending on what area you are in. The Southwest and Florida are brutal for these cars in the summer months. Even with the high reflectivity factor and integrated absorbtion patterns, it simply becomes too uncomfortable.
My friend as a glass top Vette in S. Florida and still had to buy the painted solid targa top for the 3 summer months to prevent excessive heat build up. Here in Arizona, the sun is just plain deadly during the summer months and one must have 'shelter' from El Sol.

Turbos were made in '98, but they were not sold in the US. I don't know whether RoW markets could get a '98 Turbos S.

Since the Targa has a retractable fabric sun shade that can cover the inside of the glass, why should it get so hot even in a hot climate? Does the glass roof let so much heat in, even with the sunshade, that the AC cannot cope?

As a follow-up to many of the comments/questions/etc. from a Targa owner:

- The Targa is a *great* car. I second all of the comments re: "open-air feel" and "lots of light" inside, without the hassle/worry factor of a Cab.

- Others have already said this, but I'll reinforce: yes, there were Targas in 1998; no, none of the Targas were widebody cars (all were built on Cabriolet tubs).

- The way the top is designed, leaks around the glass roof are nearly impossible. This is because there is quite a large metal lip/channel all the way around the window. When it closes, it forms an interlocking seal with the top frame around it. Now, before a bunch of you challenge the "impossible to leak" statement, let me follow-up and say leaks around the *door windows* can be a problem. On my car in particular, the driver's side door at the top leading edge of the window has been a problem on a couple of occasions. The reason for this (in my opinion) is because the door windows have no frame around them like the Coupe has. As a result, the edge of the glass has to seal against a rather wide, thick rubber weatherstrip, and water seems to get around this at times. There is a TSB on water entry for the 993 Targa, to help resolve issues from common entry points.

- The top does "whistle" a bit if out of adjustment. This happens particularly if you open the top at speed (which can make your ears pop! ) and then close it without coming to a stop. There's another TSB on the top adjustment

- As far as the "too much daylight" is concerned, the Targa has a power retractable sunshade to handle this problem (although I live in Florida and have never driven around with the shade drawn).

- Aesthetics are a personal thing, but I really like the special Targa wheels. Check the link in my signature for pics of my car and the wheels.

- As I said earlier, I live in Florida. In the summer months it gets blazing hot. As many of you know, the 993's A/C system is not the best, and this is true of the Targa as well. The extra glass contributes to the cooling problem. The top is factory tinted glass, and is actually two layers of glass (as on some Mercedes cars) to give better insulation. The tint also blocks UV light, which helps quite a bit. I had the side and back windows tinted to match the top (the top could *not* be tinted more, according to the tint shop). This helped even more. Finally, on those hot days, when I first get in the car and start her up, I just put the windows down and open the top all the way up. It's amazing how fast the heat goes out of a 3-foot-square sunroof.

- Several referenced the Porsche "Red Book". While a great book, and one I would still recommend for Porsche owners/shoppers, For those considering Targas, note the Red Book has a number of inaccuracies. See this thread for more information.

Well, I hope this helps. Again, the Targa is a great car, and, as Porsches go, it's also fairly rare. Because of the Red Book inaccuracies, I had to call PCNA to get production figures for 1996. See this thread for the figures.

Here's to see-thru tops!

This has NOT been my experience in Florida through several summers. The sunshade does a good job of keeping the car cool while parked in the sun and the AC does a good job when you're driving. You also have the added option of leaving the wind deflecor open with the sunshade closed. This is how I leave my car when it is parked at my office (where I can see it out the window and close the top if rain comes).

My only complaint is about a few rattles and squeaks that I've been unable to address.

I'd have to agree with Chris: See-thru tops are great!

I'm going to pass on the '98 targa since I really want the "S" model. I have negotaited the price down pretty far. I have a bunch of pictures and the sellers contact info if anyone is interested:
The car has ~$42k miles, clean carfax, etc. Dark green/beige.

Quick Reply: Would a '98 Targa have the same widebody as a '98 C2?
