Question Air Injection Check Valve, Who Else ?

Hello all:

Yesterday I had the wiring harness recall performed and got a call that my air injection check valve was corroded and had failed. The dealer told me that they are finding this valve failed on most 993 they are doing harness replacements on. So much so that the part is on long term back order. This little valve is only accessable when the intake is off. So once the part is available, off comes the intake again...
My valve was rusted in two, so as an emergency repair the dealer installed a defected, but whole vlave to carry me over until these parts become avaialble.

Anyone else run into this.

Thanks !

Had my harness done 3 weeks ago, and got the exact same call from the dealership. Had them both done at the same time. I think the part was about $70. They had to have the part flown in directly from Germany. Took about 3-4 days. All is well now.

I can see the check valve in the PET diagram, shown as part number 993 113 250 02 for 96-on non-turbo's. Where is located? Is it visible in the engine compartment?

Behind the air filter. It is a crappy, japanese, part that is subject to rust and breaking.

Ah, yes. That crappy cheap non German Valve, correct Mark. I agree but, feel the removal of the right Intake Manifold is not necessary.

When my harness was replaced the dealer called and told me the "secondary air injection manifold" mwas rusted out and needed to be replaced. It was done at no cost under good will, and i was told the part was around $200.

I think you had to pull mine because it was so stuck.

Don:

Tony charged me 60 for the part.

Can anyone enlighten me as to the effects of a failed air injection check value? For those who had it replaced did you notice any difference? I did search and found Marks previous comments. Should this item be found in a typical service?

Cary:

It is all smog related. All the fan does is pump air when the engine is cold at startup. It turns off after a few minutes. It will have no effect on anything performance related.

I would imagine that it would not be found during a typical service as it turns off well before the mech probably hears it. Mine was really loud as the air was unrestricted. To add, it sounded like I had a squeaking fan belt since the air was flying out of the hose into the engine bay. Tony (see above) thought it was the fan belt initially too, as he had just replaced that belt a few days prior. They pulled out their stethoscopes and found the noise coming from the rear of the bay.

Is this valve failure something that is inherent in the 993 (i.e. all years) or is it related to the defective wiring harness?

I have a sneaky feeling that it's all 993's but the ones being found are done so as a result of the wiring harness recall which would otherwise go undetected if not for all the removal of plumbing to replace the harness.

Any thoughts on this?

Is this a hard item to replace as a DIY? The removal of the right intake manifold doesn't seem trivial (as is most of the work associated with the 993).

Thanks,

*****

Nothing to do with the harness. I would imagine that the older the car, the more likely the problem. I would also think that regions with increased moisture (hence the rust) would accelerate the problem. In a 95, I would think it would be an easier DIY than in an 96+.

You are right about the recall. The mechs probably see the decapitated check valve during the harness replacement.

I am looking at the PET program trying to see which part is it that is getting replaced? There are two possible items:

#4 p/n 993.113.245.00 cut-off-valve

or

#5 p/n 993.113.250.01 check valve

Does anyone have the p/n of this commonly replaced part of the air injection system?

Thanks for the help!

Failure of his part will show up when checked with either the Bosch KTS300 or PST2 tester.
On the "hammer" it will be "secondary air flow low" The valve is the usual (but NOT only) reason for this fault code. Checking all systems is part of all maintenance services and before most repairs.

I have to replace part no. 993.113.250.01. I am told that it superscedes to 993.113.250.03 for MY95.

If you find any in the US, let us know the source.

Regards

They replaced mine, too, during the harness change over Christmas break. Ultimately, it seems I was charged $60 for the part, no labor.
