For me, the Continental basically filled a hole in the dash where an ugly modern Alpine was when I bought the car. Works fine, sound quality is just OK; looking to add an amp and quality speakers under the original grills. The Blaupunkt seems more conducive for building a nicer system, looks better, retains a built-in mic, and from the post above seems like the USB charges the phone.

Can the backlighting be changed to match the 993 dash? Can anybody provide pics?

The Frankfurt has a range of 4,200 colours to choose from - basically you can adjust the Red, Green and Blue levels from the settings menu to get what you want. I have a red car so went with full on Red whilst earlier in the thread there are photos of orange. I quite liked the various shades of Green but my wife wanted the display to 'match'!

So you don't need to use that other USB charger thing you installed now?

If I am alone in the car maybe not, but my passenger will probably need a re-charge at some point. Also the radio USB does not have 'fast charge' which the dual USB outlet does have. At the moment I leave the cable plugged into the USB gadget as it out of the way until I need it.

When using Waze with screen on, streaming audio and cell access the phone may just about maintain its charge level via the radio, but with the fast charger it will do all this and fully charge. However I have not really had the chance to test the performance of the radio USB charge as yet.

I have the Bremen and that's pretty much exactly how it has worked out for me. I use Waze and stream BT audio, and when driving on the more fun, scenic roads the phone is often losing a cell signal and searching. With all that the rear usb of the radio just about maintains phone charge. It won't charge it.

Blaupunkt Customer Service have confirmed the USB sockets are limited to a maximum of 800ma each. That is good enough to charge devices if they are not in use or keep the battery static if they are in use.

Ok well the head unit was delivered today and couldn't be happier. I'm an idiot when it comes to electronics and car stereo installation and I literally had it in and working in under 5 minutes. Radio looks absolutely perfect in the dash and was truly plug and play. I didn't install the the external mic however made a few calls while driving and the bluetooth worked great on my end as well as the recipient of the call. Bluetooth audio paired instantly and works great. Again, very happy with this purchase. Not sure it really sounds any better than my old CDR220 however don't really care.

Hi all - Got a little excited and "accidentally" hit buy on a Frankfurt for my 1995 993 with HiFI. I see that these look like they were plug and play for non-HiFi. Has anyone installed one of these in a HiFi equipped car yet? I want to keep as much of this car as original as possible.

My install was very simple and mostly plug and play. IIRC All I had to do extra was splice into the antenna amplifier wire (i think) to also signal the stock HiFi amplifier. Works wonderfully.

^ Still hoping to get around to this. Please post pics!

FWIW, although this reissued Frankfurt isn't similar to any of the US period offerings, it looks a lot like the original unit in this special car:

I got it for my testarossa and I matched the color to the orange, basically Red at maximum and just 1 of green. BUT I find difficult to read in daytime and yes I have the brightness at maximum and I don’t have the auto dimmer enabled. I found Green at maximum is easier to read but it doesn’t match my dash color. Anybody else has issues with the glare? Thanks

Same here. I have tried all colours but with the same result, all being unreadable in daylight. They need brighter LED's.

While you guys have your radios out, you might want to do the easy mod that enables fog light switch use without needing to have headlights on.

If you then leave the fog light switch pulled out, the fogs will automatically come on when you start the car, providing DRL function.

Link in my signature.

@centerpunch I have a cab, so no defrost. What would you recommend I tap into to do this mod?
