Question New Alpine Receivers-Will they fit?

I am considering upgrading my factory Cd/Radio on my 97-993 with one of the two new units from Alpine. CDA-7998 or CDA-7897. The problem is that the faceplates on both of these units have a swing mechanism to adjust the angle of visibility. At its top angle it sits higher than the units faceplate. I am worried it might "hit" the switches right atop the radio. ie.Fog light, rear window defogger, and the lighter.
Called Crutchfield-they were cluless. The Alpine web page does not help. Do any of you have any info. on these units? Has anyone installed them on their 993 w/o a problem? Thanks for your help.

at the Crutchfield website you can put in the make, model, year of your car. It will display the units that will fit.

Out of curiosity, I looked at the Crutchfield link that Phil suggested. They do link the Alpine CDA-7897 and CDA-7998, as well as the DVA-7996, as appropriate matches. However, I could see how the motorized faceplate might bump into things in our cars.

I would recommend calling a knowledgeable shop, such as Car Audio Innovations (a Rennlist sponsor), that has done high-end stereo upgrades in Porsches. Surely, they would know the answer to your question.

I just installed the new Alpine and it does fit and does not look too much like an arcade game.
The face plate will not hit the dash overhang to install a CD. There is no use for the "tilt-up" feature as it points up too high. Do not get the alpine with the navigation screen as the screen pop-up will NOT clear the dash overhang. If you want navigation, you must install a screen lower down either mounted in the ashtray, or a top the counsol.
Let me know if you need more help on this as I spent lots of time thinking about this.

Thanks for your prompt ideas. The other choice I might do is to leave the original cd/radio but get a new amp, speakers, and the satellite radio alpine box. This would offer me a "basic" look, but would gain a better sound without the other possible problems of the new units. It would look factory to thieves --no one wants a Becker unit-- right? we shall see..............

That is fine, but sounds overly costly. Ive explored many options and believe the best performance for value is: the better alpine units plus new speakers is more than fine for our small cars. I did not do a separate amp or subwoofer. There is plently of power from the new alpine, IMHO, but, im neither an audiophile nor intend to provide music for an urban block party.
good luck

Question

Rob, out of curiosity...which Alpine head unit did you use?

the 7998 requires a separate amp...since you didnt go with a amp or sub...I would like to get your recommendation

TIA

Hate to throw a cat amoungst the pigeons but.....I tried to install the CDA-7897/8 and it just would NOT go perfectly. That amazing 1.33 DIN display did foul slightly on the switches above. As a professional installer who gave it a go told me " it'll be fine, as long as you don't want to operate any of the switches while the head unit is on ". My advice? See the install and check it out to make sure that you will be happy first.
BTW - The Alpine site did not list this as a workable install.
Search earlier threads of mine ( #2726 ) for more info or e-mail me.

I have the Alpine 7998 in my 964 and my 993 and it's fine... I mounted the box with a 1/4 black bezel [available pretty much anywhere] to hold the unit and mounting box a bit more than normal off the dash and off the dash instrumentation above... and I just walked down to Canal Street and picked it up at the first one of the car stereo stores I passed... [Which I presume in the Urban equivalent to driving to the mall with the Radio Shack and Circuit City... In truth the lighter was moderately a pain in the A-- for the driver but not at all impossible. Being dexterous and driving my car are in my case stretching the envelope and besides you shouldn't smoke so much anyway and not in your Porsche... and I stopped 5 months ago so who cares about “your” problems… joking son… just joking

Anyway far I know the Screen/Nav unit [# escapes me] won't fit [not at least without a custom box detail to pull it out enough from the Dash line to miss the overhang when open which would look... that’s right… S T U P I D…
BUT I REPEAT THE ALPINE 7998 HEAD IS AWESOME... NEEDS AMP AS IT'S JUST A HEAD... BUT AT 549.00 [which is what it's available for as of yesterday via Indoaudio@aol.com http://www.stores.ebay.com/id=15268997] IT’S PRETTY DAM SWEET…

As a follow up to my question last year, I decided to leave the original unit/ w a6CD/Sony hook up. but added all new speakers MB Quart/ w a Punch 500X amplifier/ a Satellite radio hook up w/ Alpine TUA-T020XM Radio Tuner,a TERK TRK-SR2 Satellite Radio Antenna that was NOT roof mounted, not even top shelf mounted, but rather placed hidden in the back between both speakers.. reception is still awsome!, The Alpine CRA 16676RF Radio Controller also fits neatly below the ashtray. My Radio specialist in Miami told me not to go w/ the CDA 7998 or the 7897 due to angle problems. The sound that I have now is great. I kept the original look, plus my Sony 6/CD. Now I have satellite radio/a super sound that even my teenage kids like , and my new speakers are soooooooooooo sweet!
