1996 Cab top
Hello all just got my 1996 993 Cab this week - and of course I have a question already.
I have an issue with the way the 993 top closes -
On the 993 it feels like the top could break the front windshield when it slams down – I mean SLAMS!
I had a 1992 America Roadster, and a 1990 944 Cab. And I do not remember how hard the top closed on those – but it was not memorable.
Is this typical?
(not the lack of memory - the hard close)
Thanks
Thomas

My 97 cab doesn't startle me or slam when it closes. I don't know much about the adjustments on the cab top, but it sounds like something is loose on yours? Mine does have a rattle in the passenger side closing mechanism, when the top is up. Best of luck.

Mine closes pretty hard as well. It probably requires an adjustment. In the interim, I've found a quick, effective and no-cost solution.
As the top is closing, simply reach up and hold on to it until it latches. Just don't put your fingers between the top and the windshield frame!

Mine starting slamming while closing last summer, but went away in the fall. I continually, like weekly, used Wurth rubber spray for the rubber seal behind the windshield. The rubber was in excellent shape, but seemed to be a bit too flat to provide a cushion. So everytime I sprayed, I tried to reseat the seal. Did that for about 4 weeks and slamming went away.
When my top was slamming, I used to get the top about 7/8's up, stop it, than go down the balance for the other 1/8th. That reduced the slamming for me.
Of course when raising and lowing the top it is important to on a level surface.
Good luck with your new Cab, perfect time of the year for you to begin enjoying it !

Your top's mechanism needs to be adjusted - mine started doing the same thing early last summer. For a while, I used Mo's 7/8ths approach, but decided to get it fixed.
You don't want to manually interfere with the top's operation, since you could damage the convertible top motors and transmissions, which are very expensive items (I think the motors are ~$500 each(!)).
As I recall, the dealer charged for around 1 hour for the adjustment - it now comes up and gently touches down as the header locks engage.
Good luck!
