Observation: This 993 is a nice car.

The fluid lines, the 6 speed trans, the impressive suspension. I must say that it is quite an upgrade compared to so many of the other 911 versions.

I will also say though that Porsche really used quite a bit of vinyl. I can't get over how much of it surrounds me. In the cars defense, I came from a 1991 911 turbo which was draped with fine Porsche leather. I may be spoiled because of that. However, before the '91 was an 1978 930, it had substantial leather as well. So did most of my other 911's. Only a 914 I had rivals the 993 in vinyl content. So I dunno... I just think this 993 has an awful lot of vinyl. Sign of the times?

Anyhow, while I have this in mind, I have come across a leather conditioner that is practically amazing. It goes by the name Soffener and it puts Lexol on the shelf. Not cheap, but fabulous stuff.<a href="http://www.colorplus.com" target="_blank">find it here</a>

But all of the vinyl above is okay, because I am reveling in the fact that I have a "low optioned" model that represents true sporting driving. That is the driving "style" I am looking for now anyhow. Sure I have spruced it up w/ a few "tidbits" in Rennlist member fashion. Like here is an item that keeps my mind off the vinyl:


I have asked a lot of opinions on this carbon shifter medallion & have gotten nothing but thumbs up! It is truly a nice piece, and its a nice lo-priced gift to the car. The only drawback is that once you get started w/ updates like this, you don't want to stop. I can see people doing the whole interior with this stuff. (Eye that console front switch panel for example... I also took the opportunity to upgrade to Robin Sun mufflers. I love them, and I think my neighbors do to. They sound just right. I have been thinking about some different exhaust tips... But I do like my stockers. The jury is still out on that I guess.

Lastly, I have mentioned this before on another forum but if any of you want to "become one" with your car then step up to some Victoria wax. The top of the line version is actually applied BY HAND. Without an applicator. JUST USE YOUR BARE HAND. The carnuba content is so high that the warmth from your hand is needed to help melt it as you apply. You do get every crevice & crack this way, and you get to REALLY feel the lines of your car. It can be intoxicating. However, don't let the wife see you doing this if you don't often massage her as well! That may hurt her feelings. I got my supply from a Rennlister. It is by far the best wax - period. I have tried them all.

Michael, thanks for your post. I have used many carnuba waxes and they are great, but I've lately found a product that I like much better. It is a polymer "wax" that lasts forever, Zaino. I put several coats on last July and the water is still beading up perfectly when I wash the car. Some of my other cars that I used carnuba on at the same time lost their wax coats months ago. The shine from this product is also amazing. Many concours participants are using it as a base coat with carnuba on top for the best shine. I tried Zaino for the first time last summer and I have basically thrown everything else out in the garbage. It is so easy to use, shines like nothing else and lasts a long time.
My brother-in-law and I detail our new-to-us F250 in under two hours and the truck still beads. It is outside constantly, since it won't fit in a garage.

On silver it is amazing as well, didn't think it would make a difference but it does. For what it cost maybe $30 for the two polishes you owe it to yourself to try it.

I know that Larry Reynolds at Car Care Specialties strongly suggests that polymer waxes do not work well on German finishes, but this is certainly not the case with Zaino. Perhaps, other polymer finishes (e.g. NuFinish and other Auto Zone type fare) behave differently.

Truth be know, I simply use Zaino because I want to be like Greg Fishman. He's my hero. If my car is nice and shiny, maybe he'll ask me to be part of his pit crew.

Did you use the Z-2 (clear coat finish) or Z-3 (regular paint)?

Anir, I must not have taught you anything, it is not how shiny YOUR car is <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> but how shiny MINE is. If you want to be part of the pit crew you got to get that part right. Which end the big tires go on is the next lesson. Kids when will they learn it is not about them.

If your car has a clear coat finish use Z-2 if not use Z-3. I have both since my silver has a clear coat and the black doesn't.

I will give that Zanio another try. You say do Zanio followed by a carnuba like Victorias?? I will try that.

The last Zanio job I did was on a white car. I will look into a test on red.

I gotta tell you though... I placed 1st @ the 2001 Porsche Parade Concours with my stuff, and I realllly like it. However, I trust all of you <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> , and will follow your collective advice.

Kim: Just an FYI, many, if not all, of Porsche's recent non-metallic paint offerings do have a clearcoat. I know my 1998 993 Speed yellow Cab had a clearcoat. FWIW.

FWIW I have been using Zaino for a year now and the stuff is great. Really lasts long, fantastic shine, easy to apply and is very reasonably priced. What else can you ask for?

I'm not so sure you should apply a traditional carnuba wax on top of Zaino. Might not be compatible, although you could always take it off with strong dishwashing soap if it doesn't work.

Neither I nor my hero/mentor/pit crew boss have ever come close to matching your placing at a concours event (come to think of it, we've never participated in a concours ), so you might view our enthusiastic advice as the voice of inexperience.
