GTR 993:

LOL,.....Sorry to tell you that yes, the seat will need to be removed so you can extract the ECU under there. Your car is the last year that these were socketed so R&R'ing the chip is relatively straightforward and less expensive than the OBDII versions. You will need to read and writedown the Bosch ECU number (0.261.203.xxx) on that cover as there were different versions used in the '95 model year.

You will just deal with the shear bolts, one time only,.....

I dred taking that seat out, but so be it. I am not the most mechanically inclined person, Steve how much will a chip cost me for me car I am very interested and would like to make a decision ASAP. How much of an increase should I expect on a relatively stock car? Thanks for the help I look forward to talking to you in the future, you seem to be the go to guy on the board. Thanks again

GTR 993:

Its really not that bad to extract that seat; believe me, there are FAR tougher tasks on these cars,...

Please E-mail directly or call, as I do not conduct any business in these forums. Its the only way I can maintain my objectivity/credibility here.

The majority of 993's will gain about 15 to 18 HP with a properly programmed chip. These cars do vary and no two seem to be alike in the power department,......

The motorsound cover, conversely does not. It doesn’t matter which is on the car from a performance point of view, so I use the motorsound airbox cover.

Also, I had to remove my seat to get to my ECU and further, I had to drill out some sheer bolts to remove the super-protective metal shield covering the ECU. Unless you have unnaturally small hands and arms I don’t think you can remove the ECU without removing the driver’s seat. If you can, I don’t think you would save any time.

Hi Hank, sorry for the late reply....

Very interesting observation about your airbox cover. I should have mentioned that I also have Fabspeed mufflers installed, and the sound difference with a few extra holes drilled in the airbox was pronounced! Very appealing. Mufflers resonate a bit at 2800rpm, so can't tell if airbox adds to this.

My ECU on my 95 993 is very easy to access without removing the seat, and no bolts to shear off! I've done this twice (long story, but installed an east-coast chip - hated it (knocked under load) - removed it ) I'm a 6ft guy with by no means small hands I know you have a 95, but I wonder if we have different boxes..

You said to "stay away from the fully cut out airbox options". Why do you say that? I cut the top off of one of my airbox covers and just wanted to know if I were doing something wrong. I will say that I have a rough start up. Maybe they are connected, so I will put back on the motorsound cover and see if it clears up. Thanks

I don't think you've done anything wrong. I was just trying to say that buying such a airbox lid might be a bit too much. Also, I'm still concerned how the clutch vent tube would work with a fully cutout airbox.

Hi Oleg,

Curious ... could you actually hear the knocking?

FWIW, I have Protomotive's performance software installed, and have never heard knocking (it's been installed for 15k miles). From what I understand, the software is setup with California's crappy gas in mind.

I'm sure he can. I hear my "stock" engine knock occasionally when the ambient temperatures are above 85°F.

Hmmm .... never gets above 85 here on the coast. Maybe that's why I never hear knocking . FWIW, I can recognize knocking when I hear it. For example, my wife's Miata knocks sometimes, unless we use 89 octane (it's only supposed to require 87).

Actually I heard it when I dyno'd my car, just for kicks. While driving, I could not hear it, but again the knocking occured at WOT going to redline in 4th. I was probably knocking all over the place the weekend prior at Laguna Seca, but could not hear anything. Out came the chip, and I returned to stock chip - no knocking under load on dyno.
