Thanks for the great write up. It's quite timely for me since I've had Viperbob's LWF/RS clutch kit sitting in my garage waiting for a G50/21 which I've just located. I expect to do the same mod in May. BTW, anyone looking for a US G50/20 gearbox (49k mi) - mine will be available?

The 6th gear top speed remains unchanged, although reached at a higher rpm since it's HP limited not rpm limited. Based on gearing, top speed w/the G50/20 would be 188mph vs. 178mph w/the G50/21, but there's not enough power to reach either.

A fellow Rennlister's wonderful on-line program is available to compare rpm/mph between the Euro G50/21, the US G50/20 & the G50/21 w/RS 1st gear.
It can be found at http://members.rennlist.com/david_t/gears.htm and works w/IE, but not Netscape.

Dan, what's the approx. price differential when trading a US spec. G50 up for a Euro spec. box?

That link is great. Really cool how you can move the speed and RPM lines around. It really bears out what I have read posted here many times regarding this mod ...."the real money is in 3rd thru 5th"...as the differences between the two boxes are much more dramatic in those gears. This is an excellent chart for someone to look at who is considering regearing their existing box (which I did consider). If you were going that route I would think leaving 1st and 2nd alone, doing new 3rd to 5th and moving 5th to 6th (as I have seen sugested in the archives) is a good and econimical way to go. Rick,
While doing my research for this mod I came across a Euro spec box with 50k miles and LSD I could have delivered for about $3900. You can then sell your box for (guessing a bit here) about $1700 to $2500 so the net out of pocket is not too bad. Of course you can't be 100% sure about the condition of the box you are getting and there are labor costs to be considered although this seems like something that you might DIY. In my case the box I bought had been opened twice and refreshed which was the deciding factor in making my decision on how to proceed.

Well done, Jamie! I have been looking for your write-up. Your Rube-Goldberg-like trip was so intricately coordinated and interdependent that I thought the likelihood of something going wrong at one stage or another was high. Kudos to you and your brother for pulling off a long trip, multiple purchases, multiple RR's of components, long return trip, and then tracking, all in good health with no disasters, whew. Thanks John. You're right the trip was tightly planned. We did have one mishap...3 1/2 hours into the trip we blew a heater core hose in the truck on the PA turnpike. Imagine my horror as I watch a giant cloud of steaming water and antifreeze spew from the back of the truck and engulph my 993.

We rumaged around in the tool box of the borrowed trailer and found the last of a roll of duct tape. After taping up the offending hose, we slid down the side of the highway and found the smallest of little drainage runoffs and managed to fill the radiator after about 15 trips with coffee cups full of the dirty, algead water. Found a Ford dealer and 4 hours later we were back on the road to Chicago...hence the 4 am arrival time there. I might have used up all my luck but Thursday is the pick 6 night in NJ so I'll take your advice.

Did you get your Pss9's installed yet?

Not yet, the engine and exhaust are out while some "goodies" are being added. I swear this is the last set of mods to the car, honest

I got mine from Gert last month for 2900 euro, which today would only be $3450.

The last two auctions for used G50/20's (that I followed) on eBay went for 1,525 and 1,680. I took less than that for mine; maybe I could have held out longer, but decided to take a lesser amount/quick sale and not have to hassle with the shipping process. Realistically, I think you're looking at 1500-2000, imho, more if you have lsd.

you will reach about 170 -175 Miles with the G50 03 or G50/10 ( Euro RS )a little more with the G50/21 . I tried all in my Car and the G 50/21 is still in it .
To be happy with the G50/20 you need a good 3.8 with lots of torque to be happy . The Jump between Gears is way to much for a normal 3.6 ,or you have to save 300 Kilogramms on the car .
I bought 2 G50/20 last week , one for 1200 and one for 1500 .The last G50/21 i sold was 4000 $( at todays rate ) w. LSD
