Default Are my rotors shot?

How do I make the call on when to replace rotors?

I am about to replace the pads, but there is a fairly large lip on the rotors.

Any advice is appreciated.

They CAN be machined if they are w/in spec, but I'm sure not many here would do that. Unless you have a way to measure their thickness, you'll have to take it to someone and have them measure for you.

I doubt you'll find any reputable shop that would endorse resurfacing our rotors. It's certainly contrary to Porsche's directive. New rotors are not very expensive, especially considering safety issues.
The link posted by Jeff gives good guidance. There's also a minimum thickness listed in the shop manual, which has been previously posted, try a search. I don't have that info at work.

I just looked into this myself. You'll need to go to shop that has a micrometer to measure the thickness at the smooth friction zones. These zones are located directly outside the areas of where the brake pad would make contact with the rotor.

According to the manual, the minimum wear on the front is 30mm and the rear is 22mm.
