If, as you said, you "just love the lines of this 993targa," do it. Plus, you won't have to give up open air motoring. Another vote for - Just do it <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

Check with Gert, but I doubt anyone makes one for a Targa. Probably best to go with a custom made one and have it matched (powder coat or upholstered) to your interior. Much more stealthy that a shiny roll bar IMO.

George,
I am putting in a vote for DONT DO IT !

A genuine turbo will have a myriad of differences that you will not, to be able to cope with the power etc.

You will have a car that people will rightly so be very cautious of buying later.

Sure you would have a car that would probably be a lot of fun, but unless you have the abilty/funds to put the 'experiment' down to experience, I suspect that you may ultimately regret it.

It easy for us to urge you to do it as at the end of the day we would just log off - you would be left with a pile of doo doo. I really wonder how many of us would actually do it if the 'funds' were available.

If you are desparate for the extra HP - I would suggest you get a genuine TT.

Tito.

Elon

The engine including mufflers,ECU, wire harness and clutch kit cost me 8000 euro plus another 500 for transportation and duties.I think it was a deal i could not pass up.The engine is in immaculate condition, from what i "see".

Tito

I had the same concerns as you said but many of you rennlisters must understand the feeling of wanting to keep our first 993 forever. But most importantly i live as i mentioned earlier in a verry warm climate and the targa is a perfect 993 combining open air feeling without loosing the beautiful lines of a 993 carrera
Too much power to pass up if their are no installation problems.

There are others here who know more than I, but as I understand it the Turbo has a stronger 1st gear, beefier hubs/axles, etc. Look into the drivetrain enhancements.

This is a project that I have dreamed about many times...turbo power in a RWD car a la GT2!

Let us know what you learn, decide and do!

The motor is a direct swap the big headache is the wiring harness which really to do the job right has to be changed completly. If your thinking about turning up the boast you would have to put in another oil cooler as well. The 21 box would hold the power as long as you weren't doing much track day work. If you roll your arches in the back you can get some wide rubber under there. there is a guy who did a turbo 4 conversion with a cab and it was a bit to much power for the chassis. I would think you would need that cage. If you don't do let me know, have thought about doing the same in mine.

Nick,

As a fellow Targa owner, I can share your desire to upgrade to the Turbo engine. If it was up to me, my concerns would be:

- Is the mechanic really qualified to do the conversion? Has he done it before?
- Is the Targa body rigid enough to handle the extra HP and torque? What are the long term effects?
- Do you need to change the exterior to match the Turbo engine? Front & Rear Bumper + rear wing? Bigger wheels & wider tires? How would these affect the original Targa look?
- So much power only on rear wheels? Bigger brakes, 2nd oil cooler.... Handling characteristics?
- Other modifications necessary to make it a long term reliable car? IMHO, a Turbo is more than just the engine.....

But, if it works out, you'll have the best combination!

Good luck!

Red Targa

I had the same concerns but after many discussions with Porsche mechanics in my area and Germany they informed me that it is possible, with some extra mods i.e.Brakes, suspension. It is a difficult job but doable.
Porsche will do the job. They have changed an engine from a 964 to a varioram engine.
The targa body is not that rigid. This is my main concern. Then again the manual says we should not changeto 18" rims and stiffer suspension but i ahve both these mods and could not be happierwith the look and the performance. I will most likely include a half rollbar and better motor and tranny mounts.
No need to change the exterior of the car. I have been told that the engine and muffler will fit in the standard narrow body.
I am supporting 285/30/18 pirelli corsas with no rolling of fenders!!
So much power on rear wheels...GT2 wildness!!
Bigger brakes for sure.My suspension is H&R for turbo anyways. They are a bit stifferin the rear.
I agree a turbo is morethan just an engine but redtarga i am sure you lovethat open air feeling.Imagine doing 300km open air!! Scary!!
I will try to figure out how to send a pic of the car.

Silver Bullet

Thats why i picked up the engine it was a great deal.

Thanks all
Nick

Have not yet installed it.It is sitting in my garage, all 408 ponies.I have a feeling of guilt,of removing an original perfect working engine and installing another one. In a way i want the car to stay with its original engine.Am i nuts?
