Default S versus 4 & 4S

Are the rear end widths the same on the 993 S, 4 & 4S? I'm looking at a 993 Carrea S I found in my town that has 40,000 original miles, one owner. I've just always looked for a 4 or 4S because I thought the rear end was wider?

S and 4S have the same Wide Body Shell. A Carrera 4 is a narrow body car.

When you get to 997 the 4 is wider than the 2

Make sure you are actually looking at a Carrera S (ie 2 wheel drive, wide body, split rear spoiler grill) and not a Carrera tiptronic S (standard 2 wheel drive, narrow body with tiptronic auto box - change buttons on the steering wheel).

Very good point. But anyone can change the rear spoiler grill, so look at the sills.

Even from this poor photo, the difference is clear.

The wider car (WB) has sills that stick out - the narrower car's (NB) sills curve under. The WB rear bumper is also a bit messy, with extra curves to make it all line up.

???

If it's an 'S' it is a wide body, regardless of transmission.

The 993 Carrera S, mechanically, chassis related, is exactly (100%) the same as a 993 Carrera.

Only differences are esthetic:

- turbo/4S front spoiler, bumper, rear bumper and sideskirts
- split grill
- widebody rear quarter panels

I think a 40.000 miles, 1st owner 993 should be of some interest, apart from any other consideration.
If the car is well cared, and you are looking for a 993, it is a very rare situation, where most of enthusiasts looking for a 911 never find themselves.

UK marketing non-sense, not a model designation. There is no official model from Porsche which includes "Tiptronic" in the model name (or on the decklid).

Carrera S came in both Tiptronic and Manual. BOTH are WB Cars! Basically a C2 NB on a WB shell in a RWD configuration.

C4S WB ONLY came in Manual. Was little brother of the Turbo less the Turbo Engine. Turbo Big Red Brakes & Rotors, Turbo Braking System, LSD standard, Turbo Suspension, 18” Turbo Wheels 285/225, Turbo AWD System.

The good ole boys are trying to help the OP by pointing out how some cars today are advertised with confusing descriptions - not what the official Porsche blurb said 25 years ago.

I believe the 4S came with the big calipers of the Turbo but as standard they were silver not red. Pedantically they are Big Silvers.

All 4S cars have big reds on them with the boost assist like the turbos. They came with 18" technology wheels too (also referred to as hollow spokes) The car was essentially a TT without the Turbo motor/turbos. the C2S did NOT have these features- unless ordered as options.

THESE were all included on the C4s as stock "Turbo Big Red Brakes & Rotors, Turbo Braking System, LSD standard, Turbo Suspension, 18” Turbo Wheels 285/225, Turbo AWD System."
