Post After reading B-line's shipping horror story...

I have a couple of questions about shipping cars. I am about to ship (in 5 days) my '97 C4S and a BMW 330 CiC from New Jersey to Wyoming. I am using Intercity and therefore hope not to experience the torment that Seth has experienced. Given Intercity's reputation, I assumed I would be OK with a visual inspection of the cars? Am I deluded? Also should I get car covers for the cars (especially the rag top) to avoid leaks if the cars are lower tier? Thanks for any thoughts.

I would not even consider a non-enclosed transport. I don't know that much about it, and I could be way off base, but after hearing Seth's story, a couple grand extra (or whatever it costs)would be worth it.

Allen-
I agree -- hence Intercity (they only do enclosed carry with nylon wheel tie down ((not suspension)). But all the discussion of PPI's on Seth's thread made pose my inspection question.

I have shipped three times with InterCity - perfect results each time. The cars are, of course, enclosed. Tied down across the tires. They have drip pans and plastic - even if an upper car leaks, it will not get on your car. Your car will likely be the least expensive, most common thing on the truck - they seem to carry some very exotic stuff. The drivers I had were all very knowledgable about what they were carrying and happy to tell me about what else was on the truck.

I have shipped cars both ways. The worst situation was an unknowledgeable (how's that for polite ) driver on an open transport who tied my vehicle down by the rear suspension arms. Luckily, no damage, but I was very concerned when I saw him pull in. If you are there to see the car being loaded it is much better. On the flip side, the high end enclosed carriers are very professional. To me it is worth the peace of mind to use this type of carrier. If its a corporate relo, insist on it. If you do use an open carrier, ask that your vehicle be put on top. And don't use a cover over painted sections of the car. You will never get it tight enough and the buffeting will NOT be kind to your paint over 2000+ miles.

Good luck,
Jason

I have used Intercity three times in 2002.....they do a great job....they thoroughly inspect the cars prior to loading and the owner signs off....upon arrival they review the inspection sheet with the receiving party...

The cars are covered by their car covers and they even cover the seats with heavy duty plastic covers....each time my Porsche has been on the second level, but I didn't see how anything could drip through...

Each team has been friendly and very professional...they communicate with you while enroute

They were referred to me by PCNA....They are not cheap, but they are worth it...

Hey Laurence,

I just want to echo some of my earlier comments. I would absouletely send your car enclosed with a reliable carrier, it's worth the money.

If I didn't have such enormous expenses moving from L.A. to Miami I would not have even considered open. But the move made quite a dent on my wallet. (Not to mention all the crap I had to buy once I got settled at Bed Bath beyond, etc.
It's amazing how quickly buying home stuff adds up.) and restocking the fridge, cleaning supplies, you get the idea!!)

The price difference for me was about $1500 for two cars.

On a side note, before I moved, I had recommended a enclosed trailer to someone but I couldn't find the info. I forgot which rennlister asked me but because I was packed, I couldn't get him the name of the company. As luck would have it, I recently came across the info on the auto transporter that I highly, highly, highly recommend.
I used them when I bought my car and couldn't have been happier.
The name of the company is G-Go and they are in N. Carolina. I will track down the number for you if your interested. (previously I thought the name was C&C but I was mistaken, it is G-GO!!)

It is a husband and wife team. Betty and Jean. He drives, she does the bookings. They only haul two cars at a time, enclosed, behind a duely.
They are very reasonable, professional, etc.

I only wish I had used them for this move..
good luck..

Thanks for the info everyone.

Seth- Thanks for the possible carrier. As of right now, Intercity tells me they are going to take the cars (a bit maddening they won't confirm a date until a few days before pick up) so I am not (I hope) in need of another carrier. Boy doesn't moving all your worldly goods thousands of miles make you wish you had a few less! Hope your cars get to you safe. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Just curious, where in Wyoming are you moving?

Would it, by chance, be Jackson?

Mike-
Yes, Jackson. If you know the valley, Wilson to be specific. Nice place--but one long drive to a Porsche dealer.

B-Line, that was me you tried to get the shipper information for. Thank you and sorry you are having so much trouble. I sure hope that it all works out for you in the end.

Laurence, I used Reliable Carriers to move my car from San Diego to Phoenix and then drove the rest of the way to Atlanta (I wanted it quickly that's why ). They were great to work with and came highly recommended. Their price all the way to Atlanta was less than Intercity and their timing was much better as well. Give them a call!

I understand there's a Porsche tech who comes up from Denver every few weeks, and services the German cars in the valley. Supposedly there are a number of p-cars with permanent residents. We will cause a veritable explosion of 993s.

We'll have to stage some hill climbs.

I do know Wilson well. And Nora's I spent a good part of last winter looking at lots there.

Where's your place?

I bought a parcel on Bar Y Road/West Gros Ventre. It looks at the pass and Glory Bowl. Hope to build in a couple of years, unless the market keeps tanking.

I absolutely love it out there.
