Snorkel? Is something missing? Help!
I was just looking at Robins site and noticed this picture with the airbox and the snorkel. From the pic it looks like the snorkel connects to the airbox via the hole on the right.
Im probably being technically useless as usual BUT I dont seem to have a snorkel... Just the 2 holes in the airbox the large square one and the little round one.
Please Help...

Ive just look at FFs recent piccie and I definitely do not have that snorkel.
What is it? Do I need it?
Where does the other end connect to?
Lookin at Robins piccie again, the little round hole on mine isnt round BUT oval looking and its so clean that it doesnt look like anything has ever connected to it.

Bins,
DO you have a tiptronic?
The tiptronics cars don't have the clutch ventillation hose attached to the air box. It is used to vent clutch dust from the clutch housing area.

That snorkle is connected to the clutch and sucks the dust out of the clutch housing (a vacuum effect). You definitely should have it connected!
Are you damaging your clutch? Not sure, but it's definitely not helping. During air filter changes, I always notice more dirt near the clutch opening, meaning something is being sucked out of the clutch housing.
Have it checked out.

Actually, there is positive pressure from the clutch to the snorkel. Look at this picture of my solution to the “Carrera Cup Airbox.” I get lots of dust inside the filter on the snorkel, which tells me there’s positive pressure.
FWIW, I don’t usually run in this configuration. I leave the filter covered.

Oleg,
One thing I have never been able to verify was that if the clutch ventillation system was based on a positive or negative vaccum pressure system.
Meaning that if it really required the vaccum pressure from the air box, or that the clutch dust gets blown upwards into the air box by itself?
How do you know that the clutch dust is sucked through the snorkel?
Does it matter? Well, this will effect the number of people that goes out and drill holes on the air box, since that may take away the vaccum pressure needed to properly ventillate the clutch. To be on the safe side I duct taped all the holes on my air box.

jhb,
I am not suggesting that the factory motor sound air box is any different than the home made boxes.
The motor sound box was a bandaid solution came out afterwards to satisfy some of the complaints about the 993 being too quiet, maybe Porsche didn't consider that having extra hole may effect the vaccum pressure needed for the clutch ventillation when they did that? I don't know. In any case that will depend on how the clutch ventillation works.
I am also curious how does air and dust gets blown out of the clutch housing on it's own? If there some design with the flywheel o the clutch that acts as a fan?

Very interesting. Actually, not sure if it's pos or neg pressure within the clutch system, but looking at Tom's photo, looks like the clutch housing is pos pressure. Need to investigate. Definitely would explain factory Supercup airbox setup(fully cut-out airbox top, with snorkel attached) as functional.
Robin, good question asking Bins if his car is Tiptronic - pretty much would answer that. What confused me was him saying he's got the oval snorkel hole in his airbox, but no snorkel.

While we are all speculating about the clutch dust snorkel I will add some hearsay to this thread.
I believe it was my mechanic that told me that the purpose wasn't really to get rid of the dust but to cool the clutch, the dust is just a by product of doing that.
FWIW

I do believe Bins' car IS a TIP...seems to recall he had mention that once before...
