I wanted to report that I received and installed a chip from Steve Weiner of Rennsport Systems for my 1995 993. I drove the car at a DE at Road Atlanta last weekend which gave me the opportunity to test the new chip against the stock chip.
I was very pleasantly surprised by the increased performance of Rennsport’s chip. For those of you familiar with Road Atlanta, my car would not accelerate in fourth gear when climbing turn one with the stock chip. With the Rennsport chip installed, the car accelerated 15 mph before the braking zone for turn three. It also increased speed down the back straight by about five mph.
The install was very straight forward once I drilled the sheer bolts to remove the shielding plate covering the DME and alarm boxes. The only negative is a flashing alarm light in the clock. I removed the bulb to stop the annoyance. The alarm and keyless entry system are functioning normally.
Thanks, Steve for providing a quality product that performs as advertised and exceeded my expectations.

Hi Viken,
You asked a good question (especially for us in California)
I went to Steve's website and found this:
Rennsport Systems offers performance chips for all Porsches built from 1984-onward. Performance enhancing software requires the use of 92 octane (pump) or better.

Hank: Thanks for the update. I talked to Steve a couple weeks ago and was happy to hear he's shipping chips for the '95 once again. I've often wondered how to get a good comparison to show improvements without spending money for a dyno test. Your comparison is a good real-world example of an improvement.
Suwipin: I think Viken is asking if Hank got a chip for 91 octane (or more likely for a race only car, something programmed for 96-104 octane). Steve can program the chip for the quality of gas you plan to use. I was very suprised at the difference in my cars performance when I used 96 for the first time.

Yes, I asked because if Hank got a chip optimized for 93 or 94 octane (apparently found in the east) it would obviously make a noticeable difference. However, a chip optimized for 91 octane may not make as much difference.
My car is stock and the factory recommends 93 octane. With 91, it pings during 80F+ summer days. The ping is gone and the car is much more responsive with a mix of 91/100 octane. This tells me that my stock software is optimized for 92-93 octane already. I am not sure if Steve's software can improve upon that.

Hank, glad to hear you could measure a sizeable improvement. I put one of Steve's chips in and took out the AutoThority chip about the time we went to Andretti's. I don't have any reference data to compare the two but can tell Steve's chip delivers at least the same, if not more, performance (butt dyno). One thing I have noticed is the power is much smoother and more manageable in high RPM 1st gear autocross corners. The throttle isn't quite the hair trigger it used to be.
Also, I got the same flashing light in the clock. I haven't had time to take it to the shop to get the fault reset with a Hammer.
Ready to go back to Andretti's?

Viken:
I told Steve that I would never put anything less than 93 in the car. I also told him that I didn’t want to run race gas either. I know that doesn’t answer your question directly, but hopefully it gives an indication of the range in which the chip is tuned.

I've not seen it in the papers but Steve Weiner mentioned he had heard the rumor too when we were thanking about the chip and adjusting it for CA gas. Supposedly documented on a state web site somewhere.

Yes, this is true. However, by trucking ethanol from the mid-west, the cost of gas will eventually go up again. This means that we may never see more than 91 octane due to the fact that it may cost even more to produce higher octane fuels.

I also have a "Weiner" special, tuned for 93-94 octane. I can attest to the increase in torque through all the gears. I've been quite pleased with the added performance.
