Post ROW 030/ HD shocks not low enough

I have finished (maybe) the front end of the install. Before with US standard shocks the height from the crossmember bolt (per the manual) was 175mm, which is 1mm from the manual recommendation. Now I am at 165mm however the ROW 030 spec is 144mm. Not good, should have gone for the PSS-9's.

Questions, there is on the orginal struts and spacer( APPROX 15mm) that goes between the spring hat and the spring perch, in the shop manual page 40-21, it is part#3. I though that it should also go on the new struts, was this correct?

If my only option is to acchive the factory spec for ROW 030, is to cut the spring!! Is it correct to assume that it should be from the part with the thickest diameter. It seems that about 1/2 of a coil would need to me removed. What is the tool of choice? A cut off wheel, slowly not to heat the spring and have a wet rag on the rest of the spring?

No, I believe (not positive) I recall the shop owner saying he was going to cut the thin part, and he cut an entire coil section to get the front height down to match the rear. He said it was not enough cut to affect the spring rate.

I would recommend you contact someone who has done this before you cut.

Jack,
Don’t start cutting coils off springs until you get both the front and back of your install complete. I’m betting that installing your rear springs will cause the front to drop a bit, maybe down to the correct ROW specs. You know how you can lift the front tire from the rear jacking point? I think your USA rear springs are lifting the front of the car.

I can’t answer your question about the spacer, sorry. Don’t the front shocks have the threaded perches? Are they adjusted to the lowest setting?

As for cutting a coil off your progressive springs in your 993, I’m not sure I’d recommend that. You might be better off getting a set of H&R springs, which are lower than the ROW M030 springs. You could sell your ROW M030 springs to cover some of the cost. If you insist, do what Terry recommends, contact someone who’s done it before, or contact a suspension expert who would know. Cutting a coil off the front and not the rear might upset the weight balance and rake, making the car look weird and drive weird. You might also end up with a car that can’t be aligned correctly.

When I was in high school, I had a ’67 Mustang. It had a noticeable reverse rake. I decided to cut a coil off the front springs to correct this. My tool, not of choice, was an old hack saw and lots of elbow grease. It took forever to cut those springs! Perhaps if I had a new blade it would have gone quicker, but the slow speed probably kept the springs from getting hot! These springs were not progressive, so I did not have a choice of cutting a thick or thin coil off. I do recall that I had to cut an entire coil off. The perches on that car had a slot for the coil ends, and cutting half a coil would not have worked. The car looked a lot better when I was done, but my elbows were so sore after that workout I had to wait a week to drive it! <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

I measured the height where the black protective strip along the underside of the door meets the paintwork of the front and rear fender. I get exactly 8 1/8" front and rear, at the front-most and rear-most location of the black strip.
