Default My new to me 993 lasted just one week...

So this story does not have a good ending, but I suppose it could have been worse...

Found a 993 that Dick Barbour had for sale. Was told it was not in need of anything, no oil leaks. Had a PPI done, the shop also told it had no oil leaks, no repairs needed.
  • Car was delivered in an enclosed two car carrier. Mine was in the front when it arrived, the only car onboard. This is where the wheels start coming off the bus...
  • Delivery person gets in the car to back it up, pops the clutch and the car jumps forward a foot, banging into plastic milk crate between car and front of trailer. Now the cold sweat of failure begins. I tried to coach the driver on how to put it in reverse but he finally just asked me to drive it off and I did.
  • Front was not damaged as bad as I expected. Grill behind bumper was broken and I think the bumper was pushed down just enough to pinch it against the front fenders.
  • My wife and I go for a 5 minute drive. We put the 993 in garage and I smell oil. Look underneath and car is leaking from left side of engine.
  • I call Dick and he tells me he will stand behind the car and tells me to get it looked at.
  • My shop takes a look a the car and tells me the oil leaks may be starting as deep as base of a cylinder. Car needs control arm bushings and has grass and mud in the suspension under the front pan. There is respray of new undercoating under front end.
  • I report back to Dick and he refunds my money, plus PPI and my shipping expenses.
993 leaves my garage after one week of ownership. What a bummer.

All I can say is Dick Barbour is a man of his word. I cannot recommend him enough even though things did not work out for me. And when I buy again, I will only use a carrier like Reliable. I did not pick the shipper but will next time.

How did these issues not come up in ppi? Any ideas of what happened?

Ouch...sorry for your troubles, but glad that your dealer was a stand up guy! I think you were very lucky that you chose the dealer that you did.

That is the key question. In my opinion it was not thoroughly inspected.

I have expanded my hunt to 997.2's and had one fail a PPI and over-rev report yesterday. It's why we pay for PPI's.

I think your story has a very good ending. Few dealers would stand behind a car that they sold in this way. Consider yourself very lucky.

Respect for Dick Barbour 👍

sorry to hear. What the heck happened with all the misses on the original PPI. The items picked up from your shop seems too obvious for a PPI to miss.

Good luck on the next find.

Quite the rollercoaster. Glad you were taken care of. This will make it all the sweeter once you get a good one under your possession.

Subscribed for this answer as well.

Didn't even know Dick Barbour Performance existed and they are in my backyard.

Sorry to hear of the issues OP and glad it got sorted. It does make me wonder if the car was unloaded and reloaded during transport. Was the mileage on the car correct when delivered?

Yes mileage was correct. It was an Arctic Silver '97 coupe. And while it needed work the exterior and interior were in really nice shape. I am really bummed it went back, but I was told it needed nothing.

And for what it is worth Dick was really upset at the PPI too. Search my other threads in the 993 forum on my search and you'll find the PPI vendor.

I hate ripping on companies online – even if they deserve it.

would like to ask same question?
However good the dealer reacted, how could he sell in this condition (without recognizing ??)?
