Hi GAV,
Ask the last guy who serviced your car where it is.
Mine went missing, now its replacement has the phrase "PUT ME BACK ON" in dayglow orange spray paint emblazoned across it, haven't misplaced one since.
My replacement came from eBay, none are there right now but be patient, they pop up from time to time. No hurry as the cover doesn't do much.

Cover just holds heat in!

It wasn't on the car when I bought it 6 years ago.
I's the transmission cover, not the engine cover.

I had to replace my shift rod seal recently. It looked like it had been hit by something & this cover will protect that area.

Mine was on but I took it out to help ventilation and cooling.
No intention of selling the part but point is you don't need it, with rear-engine design and no off-road usage chances of undercarriage damage is very low.
At risk of telling OP what he already knows, older air-cooled do not have undertrays. Porsche added them for 993s for noise suppression purpose.

Normally I would agree with you, but I can't see how else the seal would have gotten dented. And, now that I've lowered the car, I'd like to have the protection of the cover.
I doubt it holds in much heat.

My engine has been without an engine tray for many years. Somewhere along the way an oil return tube took a road debris hit, is now slightly bent, and has a very small oil leak as a result. I still keep the engine cover off, but like you the tranny cover, I think, is a good idea to keep in place.
