Default Question about shipping tires/wheels

I have found a set of 18” FM10’s that I would like to buy, but they are in Florida, and I am in Rhode Island. The seller and I have never shipped wheels with tires mounted before. The shipping quote he received from UPS was $2000, and he checked with Old Dominion and they won’t ship used tires and wheels. I have a commercial address that they can be shipping to, as I have heard that can be cheaper.

After searching on RL, I couldn’t find any real information.

Can anyone give me some pointers on shipping mounted tires and wheels?

Thanks in advance!

Contact a shipping broker about LTL shipping and tie the boxes down to a pallet. I can't see it costing more than a couple of hundred dollars.

Google LTL Shipping Broker and you will see lots of choices.

Separate tires/wheels, look at Tire rack.

$2000??? i know shipping wheels has gotten expense over the years, but that's nuts! you can put them in a private transport trailer and have them delivered 'white glove' for less. absolutely stupid price. you can ship an entire car for less than $2000.

it will be expense, but you can ship them mounted. no big deal. I take 2 of them, face the rims inward and place packing material in between the rims. a round piece of heavy cardboard is a good base for some softer material. wrapping an old towel around the cardboard will work fine. if the rims are well protected by the tires, just put a circle of cardboard in between and taped them together. place another round piece of cardboard on the outer sides and use packing tape to basically make them a bundle. i use a lot of tape, basically encapsulating the tires. tape is cheap, damage is not. once done, they roll well but they will be heavy. worst case, you should be able to get them shipped for $300. i don't believe i've ever paid over $300 for any combination of tires/wheels (for all 4). you used to be able to do it for $100, but those days are long gone.

Yeah, $2000. Neither he nor I have shipped anything like this before, so we are both learning about the process. On the advice above I went on goship and the quotes were more in the $360-400 range, which is easier to stomach.

If you plan to ship the wheels without tires mounted have the sender buy some split plumbing pipe insulating noodles at a local home improvement store and wrap the edge of both rims with them. It will protect the edge bead from impact damage and also avoid the face of the wheel getting abraded from whatever they are shipped in.

I have used ShipNerd in the past. I customized some existing boxes that were approximately right right size by cutting them and adding cardboard where the box wasn’t large enough. If I recall it was under $300 from Detroit to MD.

Default Greyhound Bus Shipping

Greyhound ships on their buses. Check their website. I shipped 993 seats once and it worked out well.

Shipnerd is the way to go. Dramatically better prices using standard couriers.

I’ve shipped wheel/tire combos on numerous occasions. EZPZ. Since you have tires installed, just cut a circular cardboard about 2” larger than wheel diameter and secure with lots of shipping tape to protect the face and back of each wheel. I also throw in like 2 layers of wrapping bubbles under the front cardboard to protect the wheel face. Slap shipping labels on the cardboard. Done (This is how Tire Rack ships wheel/tire combos as well).
BTW, I also use ShipNerd. RI to FL shouldn’t cost more than $500. $2000 is simply stupid.

$2000 is crazy. Cost about 1/2 of that to ship my 993 in an enclosed trailer from Chicago to Houston last December. You can always try a car transport. Many times they have last minute deals for any cars going in a certain direction as long as you are willing to wait a few days.

Smart man.
This is how I've done it.

Any Shipnerd quote you get on-line probably won't be accurate.
I often use them with success, but their web tool doesn't account for items not completely enclosed in carboard or does not fit onto UPS assembly line.
If you use shipnerd, TALK to someone or you'll get a surprise.
