Default Becker C(D)R-220 / Becker Traffic Pro - Volume control acting goofy.

The Becker C(D)R-220 with volume **** from a 996 is often fitted to a 993 in place of the Becker C(D)R-210 with volume toggle switch as a way to get an aux-in (ipod, bluetooth, etc.) into the car. As well,by June 2001, Porsche had also issued a technical service bulletin to fit C(D)R-220s into 993s that were in for radio replacement as by that time Becker C(D)R-210s could no longer be had new. These Becker units had a modified LCD polarization angle for optimum usage in 993s.

Anyways, by now, many of these units will have a flaky volume **** --- i.e. twisting the **** does not yield a linear increase/decrease in volume, but yields jumping across many different volume settings, loud and soft. Or, worse, twisting the volume **** may yield no effect / lots of static. This is often due to oxidized contacts / dirty contacts in the rotary encoder.

To rectify the situation, I use contact cleaner, followed by De-Oxit D5, followed by compressed air. The rotary encoder was previously jumping around all kinds of random volume settings. The Becker works great now. Note - Becker Traffic Pros have a similar such rotary encoder.

Looks like they have a whole product line devoted to cleaning and deoxygenating electrical contacts.

Probably also ideal for de-crackling an old Fender, err...one's guitar that is.
