Post Help, 1958 LeMans Race

Hi:

I just received a poster entitled "Pit Stop" showing the 3rd place finishing 550 Spyder at the 1958 LeMans 24 Hour Race undergoing a pit stop to change the left front brake drum. In the upper right hand corner of the photo a gentleman is speaking to someone who appears to be the driver of the Spyder. Can anyone tell me who the driver is? Thank you.

I think the car you're talking about is not a 550 spyder but a Type 718 RSK driven by Jean Behra and Hans Herrmann. If it's the dark-haired gent, I think it's Jean Behra.

Is the car in your poster the #29 car?

The car placed third on distance was Porsche No 29 Type 718 RSK (chassis number 718.005) entered by Porsche KG and indeed driven by Behra and Herrmann. It covered 2429.34 miles in the 24 hrs at an average of 101.22 mph. It was seventh in the Index of Performance.

THe car may well have finishe 2nd if it were not for the brake problems.

Although placed third on distance this car did win the 2-litre class.

For more details see "Porsches at Le Mans" by Dominique Pascal - my bible for things Porsche at Le Mans up to 1984.

Thanks for the replies and yes the car in the photo is # 29. Great photo by the way, really charges you up while waiting for Spring and the upcoming season at Elkhart Lake and similat venues.

I can't take much more waiting. The Hoosiers and MPSCs are ordered and I'm ready to go.

May 7 is first Blackhawk.

What suburb are you in.

lje (whoever you are), might consider buying a book called "Driven". About 140 pages of Jesse Alexander's photos from 1954 through 1962.
