Boris,

Thanks for the info. Had to go to Almaden everytime I needed 100 octane. Much closer now.

I wonder if the 100 octane stuff will go up in price. Has anyone tracked it the last few weeks?

i was actaully considering calling the station and asking if they wanted to give PCA or rennlist members a discount for race gas.

what is the rennlist policies - would they have to become a sponsor? can just giving a discount allow them to put an advertisement up.

I'm sure this goes without saying but i have no affiliation with the station - just trying to get us all a good deal.

cheers,
boris

Yeah, all I can find is 91 crap. Where is even 92? By the way, wasn't that such a lovely scam from the oil guys? They used to sell 92 or 93, then raised the price, everyone screams, they lower the price by lowering to 91, then slowly raise the price again, and now only 91 is all over the place. Maybe something to do with winter and MTBE or whatever that is, but at least in SF, the 91 started in the summer.

JPS,

My wife is an environmental scientist and here is the explanation:

When they had to put in MTBE that was an oxidation agent that actually resulted in higher octane ratings. They reformulated to accomodate that and in that process it actually degraded the octane requirements. Now that they need to phase out MTBE and begun to do so, the refineries claimed that it would be prohibitevly expensive to reformulate back to 92 and that it would create a shortage. As a result they all got together and decided that 91 octane is the new super unleaded and that saved them $. Meanwhile it screwed all of us....

FYI.

Cheers,
Boris

My understanding is that this is just a Cali thing. 92 is available everywhere else, right?

Randy - that is true. Only CA gas has MTBE in it.

Still $4.29/gal in Agoura (So Calif).

But now the price delta between 91 and 100 seems pretty small.

I just picked up five gallons of 100 for $4.95 a gallon, ouch. They have it in drums and are thinking about putting in a pump since so many people have been coming by. They said their biggest customer so far has been the Harley club.
