Robin, dumb idea. Now how do you transfer the V1 from the 993 to your second car?
On my windshield suction cup installation, I can do it in less than a minute.
TU ES MY ESTUPIDO!!!
(nice work!)

I don't have time to do this, I really don't ... but I'll have to do it anyway. That install is just too trick to pass up. And I'll be happy to share the results if they look half as nice as Robin's.

The same way you do. Just the remote display is in Robin's tach & I assume his V1 is in it's suction cup mount just like yours.

Robin, that is sweet. Here's where mine is, for those afraid of opening things up (location recommended by Dan):

Robin - Very nice install!! I was wondering when someone would finally have the nerves to do this!
I have been thinking for a while about doing something similar but my idea was to insert a piece of smoked plexiglass in an opening in the tach - making it sit flush would be an issue. Then mount only the V1 lights (minus it's plastic face with the markings) behind it, and also cut/remove the mute/volume controls - similar to the rearview mirror remote displays that I've seen. I'd also mount a remote volume/speaker control but have not yet figured out a good place for it - any suggestions?

I had measured this space out before and it would be a tight fit (unless the mirror was move a few cm down) but feasible if you used a thin material for the enclusure. I have no idea what you would make the box out of - plexi? PVC? fiberglass?
Between your V1 tach display and a V1 enclosure, you'd have teh makings of a DIY stealth V1 install kit, which I'd bet there would be a market for.

Kim
Which Recaro seats do you have in your car?
I also currently have my v1 mounted above the mirror; but as my car is a cab I'd prefer to have it concealed when the top is down.

Thank you guys for the comments, I am glad you guys are as joyful of DIY as I am.
To answer some questions below:
To Pops (Ray Calvo) - Here are some options hope to answer to your question ---- "Now how do you transfer the V1 from the 993 to your second car?"
Like others have mentioned that my V1 main unit is still mounted on near the rear view mirror. So I can remove it very easily to transfer between our other two cars. I am guessing you didn't know that Valentine also sells a separate remote display unit that you can hook up to the main V1 unit?
If I was to sell or trade my car in for ANOTHER 993, I would either (a). Swap my black gauge faces back in and keep the aluminum gauges with the V1 remote display to transfer to the other 993 (b). Leave it as it is for the next owner and install another remote display unit in my new 993. Since the remote display unit is only around $40, it is something I can afford to buy another.
To David in LA - "my idea was to insert a piece of smoked plexiglass in an opening in the tach - making it sit flush would be an issue"
I originally wanted to do the same thing, finding the correct size smoked plexiglass is an issue, as for making it flush it can be done by inserting round rubber gasket between the smoke plexiglass and the gauge face cut out. So that the edge of the plexiglass is surrounded by the rubber gasget making the install look very factory. I actually went as far as purchasing the rubber gaskets (Home Depot screen door department), but never had the time to mess with that idea.
"I'd also mount a remote volume/speaker control but have not yet figured out a good place for it - any suggestions?"
In my 993 there is a blank switch cover in the center console that would be perfect for that. Or inside the ashtray.
As for the box enclosure, if you can find the right box please let us know, I would be very interested in that project.
Thanks

Very Impressive.
Now if I were to try this the result would be a little pile of tachometer and V1 bits surrounded by wire and drowned in a little puddle of my tears of frustration.....

hmmm...wonder is a place like N. Hollywood speedometer would sell a tach face with the cutout pre-cut as they do customoziation of VDO gauges....
Robin - did you contact any vendors to see if any would have been willing to make the cutout? I think many of us (myself included) are not as confident in our "dremeling" skills as you are!
