Default Where did you put your sub and amp?

Years ago I had an upgraded stereo system installed in my 993 when the Bose system speakers went kaput.
The current sound system in my 993 is incredible but I don't like the position of the sub woofer. It's directly behind the drivers seat which keeps me from being able to slide the seat back fully.
I can sit in the car almost comfortably but it's not ideal. I want to relocate the sub. Any thoughts?

Also, I was going to upgrade to the OEM new radio but my buddy who does car installs said DON'T... It's got horrible components and will be the weakest link in an otherwise great audio system.
Instead of spending $1200 on a ****ty head unit, spend $200 on an Alpine which is way way better.

I would think that if the rest of the stereo was stock, the OEM new head unit would be fine. But considering I have a tuned system, best to get a high quality head unit.

I have subs behind both seats- the enclosures are a little smaller though and I can get the seats all the way back. The amp is a JL 6 channel and is under the passenger seat. Sounds fantastic.

Why not just use one sub? There are many subs that are thin so maybe you could go a little larger . If you have a good set of front speakers then you might find that you wont need a sub .

This is the type of information I'm looking for please.
Did you make your enclosures? Something pre-made you can share details on?
How tall are you?
Any pics?

Hi B-Line,
Consider replacing the woofers in the doors with ones that have a very low free-air resonance and then use a digital signal processor designed to recover sub-woofer harmonics in conjunction with them, for most folks no subwoofer is needed:
See the section on this page for some ideas:

Default Amp Placement

I upgraded my door speakers so don't use a subwoofer. My amp is mounted on a custom plate in the frunk and is hidden under the carpet liner.

Car Audio Innovations has sub boxes that fit in the footwells pre-made for our vehicles.
I've had a pair for >10 years pushed by an JL amp stored under my rear seat delete.
Note: I'm 5'6" and have no seat issues - 6' and taller friends have had slight issues as passengers with feeling a bit cramped.

I went with a great amp (Lunar 2125, one of the last hand made in the US, but are no longer made) combined with Oz Audio Matrix Elite components(first speakers to receive a perfect score in Car Audio Competition) in the doors. and no Subwoofer. Historically, I have had subs in my cars, but with these speakers and amp, I really do not miss any low frequencies.
The key to good low frequency is lots of clean power, lower frequencies take more power to reproduce than higher ones.

My amp sits inside the spare in the frunk. One of my goals, was to preserve all the space inside the cabin. I have seen slim powered subs, that fit under the seats, however, I do not have any personal experience, perhaps others do and can recommend something.

Rod Birch is fantastic, years ago he installed a system in my previous 80 911 SC, with a JL Audio sub. Jamie Rawlings did my 993 system, although i don't know if he still does installs.

I would definitely give Rod a call and talk to him about what you want, and his advice is second to none.

I haven't done a new system in a long time, but nowdays, you are absolutely right, a $200 aftermarket headunit has tremendous capability. Pioneer, Alpine, Sony, JVC etc... all good companies.
Cheers!

I just threw mine in the back seat....lol!
The amp is actually in the frunk, but this way I can remove the sub anytime if my girls want to ride along with me!

Agree with others here. No one knows these cars better than Rod@ Car Audio Innovations. He did a great job with both my 1988 911 Coupe and the 1996 C4S. I would contact him make an appointment and then drive your car up there and have it done. You will be very pleased he even has the original factory carpet in many colors. By the way, he's a Porsche guy too.

The great thing about Rod is that not only is he extremely knowledgeable about Porsches, and Audio Equipment, but he has been an enthusiast himself for a long time going back to pre Rennlist, when we were Porschephiles.com. It is rare that someone is able to build a business around their passion. Rod has done just that, and it is obvious in the kind of work he puts into every installation. Back in the day, circa late 90s, Rod used to do installation tours, where him and his brother would load up their car, and go to members homes/businesses etc... and install alarms, audio systems etc...

I am super happy that Rod has succeeded in his business!

More than ten years ago, I did a major/different approach for my subs. I started with a full system from Rod Birch, amp, speakers, etc that included the rear foot well speaker mounting that he sells. A few years later I had the opportunity to redo the subs. I was stripping out the rear seats (if they can be called 'seats') and built sealed enclosures with vents into the seat wells. A DAS bolt-in roll bar was going in so the seats were no longer needed. There is perforated aluminum sheet over the speaker cones with light carpeting over that. See the pix. I don't remember the amp mfg/model but it was mounted on a aluminum plate under the passenger seat. All of the speakers were replaced with ones recommended by Rod. The head unit has USB connections for iPod/Thumb drive music storage. It all sounds great and look very clean too.
