OT?Our cars are now collectors items! :-)
Original post somehow turned into an advertisement for wheels from Joe Fab and needed to be erased so here goes again in short format:
Tripped down to Zuffenhausen to get some goodies bolted on to the tt, go on factory tour etc (well worth the trip by the way if you find yourself in Europe) and was astonished to find the following in the vast factory carparks, showrooms, mangement parking lots, service facility and museum:
1)Zillions of 996 cabrio, coupe, turbo and boxters - nothing strange there...
2)15 996 GT2 of which 5 were crash damaged press cars. (The service tech said he'd never seen a previous Porsche model that was crashed more by journalists).
2)3 959's + 1 Paris-Dakar car.
3)Selection of Vintage and race cars.
4)3 993 tt's (of which one had 50kusd worth of crash damage). NO 993 coupe/cabrio/targa.
5)1 964 coupe.
6)1 911 cabrio.
7)NO 924/944/968/928
Conclusion - our cars are disappearing fast?
Also found out a couple of things on the factory tour that I'm sure the more hardened nuts will know well:
1)Only reason for the switch to water cooled engines was expected future emissions legislation not able to be met by 2 valve/cylinder cars and air cooled not able to cope with 4 valves/cylinder.
2)US bound 996 engines were kept segregated from ROW engines. When someone asked why the response was that the US engines were cleaner! The guide would not (could not?) answer why. When asked whether they produced less power the answer was a resounding NO because the official performance figures were world wide. Begs the question whether ROW engines produce more than official power though and if not that what the difference actually is...

Isn't it mysterious how we never read anything in the mags about journalists crashing factory cars? <img src="graemlins/icon501.gif" border="0" alt="[icon501]" /> Or crashing any cars, for that matter.
From what I read in the car mags, all journos are ace drivers!! <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

The weird thing was they all had the same damage - all frontal ie rear ending people rather than exotic type track spin damage. As an aside, from what I understand of German traffic law (which admittedly is not much) if you rear end someone on the left it's actually their fault for being there (ie not being on the right). Which sounds crazy but judgeing by the way drivers were flinging themselves into tiny gaps between artics to let me pass may be true?
