Post Brake Bedding Question

Hello all,

I know this came up on a previous thread regarding track pads, but my question is what's the procedure for bedding in oem pads (on old rotors, 62K miles, if that makes any difference). I checked the archives, but apparently that's still under construction
TIA!

Hi Edward:

Everyone has their own personal method for doing this and it varies slightly with what type pads to be bedded but here's mine:

1) 7-8 easy stops from 50 MPH to a walking pace cooling off each time. You want to heat the pads gradually and not too quickly, otherwise you can glaze them.

2) 3-4 firmer stops from 70 MPH to about 30 MPH cooling off each time. The last one can be done briskly.

3) 2 firm stops from 80-90 MPH down to 30 MPH cooling each time, as well. Just drive the car for a mile or so without touching the brakes to cool everything off nicely.

4) 1 really good hard stop from 125 MPH to a halt. This should be just short of lockup. Park the car in gear without touching the brake pedal and let everything cool off enough to touch the rotors with your fingers. This takes 15-20 minutes or so and I'd bring something to read while parked on the side of the freeway,.......

Voila', you're done and you'll now have bedded & heat-cured pads that will not "green fade". If you rotors are grooved or have any taper wear, it will take some time to get the pads to conform to the rotor surface for maximum braking power.

Have fun,......

File the edge of the pad (rotor contact surface), to apx. 45 degrees. Clean all areas at caliper & rotor, apply a small amount of very hi temp greese to metal side of pad.

Long brake for first couple hundred miles. Then they're set.

Steve,
You are always full of great ideas that could get our licenses taken away. For some reason I don't think my local police or state trooper would sympathize with me when I tell than that Steve W at Rennsport told me to.
Thanks
Greg

Hi Greg:

ROFL,.....Somehow, I don't think I am the only one here who harbors such ideas,....

Based upon my past driving record, it would behoove you not to mention me to any Law Enforcement person lest you become a "guest" of the Straight-Bar Hotel.

I don't do such things anymore as I'm an Old Guy, but just remember: "If it was easy, anyone could do it."

In the past, I've simply chosen my moments & the appropriate places to perform the brake pad bedding procedures. Very early Sunday mornings work well here in 'ol PDX.
