Would You Ever Buy a 996?.....Sad Story
As some of you know, I had decided on getting a 993 for family cruising. In order to see what rear seat dimensions I had to play around with for my 2 yr old daughter's car seat, I took my wife to a local dealership to take measurements on a '97 Cab they had. I guess my first mistake was going on the showroom floor (or was it taking my wife in the first place ).
While I'm explaining to the salesguy what I'm looking for and why I want to take the measurements, my wife wanders off. A couple minutes later,we stroll over in the direction she went to still talking about how many early 993s they see a year, the general pricing, etc.....I see the most horrifying thing ever My wife is all over this 2002 Oriental Red metallic 996 Cabriolet, touching & feeling all over it like she thought it was George Clooney <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" /> . After I got her a drool cup and told her there were others like it outside, she finally left it. When we went outside to see the 993 it was over in her mind, she just didn't get it
I guess I found the demographic Porsche was looking at for this car. OK, to the point of the question. Is this car destined to be an outcast like the 928? Even 10 years down the road, would you EVER consider buying one? The depreciation levels are staggering. On Auto Trader last night, I found you could pick up all the '99s you wanted for $55-$58k. Thats $10k depreciation per year
One other question.....Do any of you have the 993 interior dimensions below for the front and rear seats? Maybe from an old showroom brochure?
Legroom
Shoulder room
Thanks, now I have to get back to telling my wife that all 996s are turbos with $125,000 sticker prices

Generally any new car is going to have its worst rate of depreciation in its first year (except for those rare cars that have premium).
Having said that the 996 pre-2002 is going to go through a hard time anyway, being between the last of the air cooled 993s with a reasonably flatter rate of depreciation and the 2002 better looking models.
So if you worrying about resale best bet would be a 993.
But then comes the question of preference, 993 or 996.
I think theres been recent threads on the 996 and 993 forums regarding depreciation/resale.
Regards

I've seen plenty of '99 996s around $50k......and those were the ASKING prices! They can definitely be had for less than the price of a clean, low mile 993, but the question is, would you want one?

The question of ten years down the road. Is the build quality of the 996 so good as to last 10 years and then some.
That is without requiring a lot of maintenance.
I ask this because so many are saying that these cars are now being built with less quality, compared to the previous generations, (as all production cars, eg, Mercedes, BMW, etc).
Since the general population want to change their cars more often, the manufacturers dont build the cars to last so long nowadays.

Regarding the interior dimensions, I don't have exact measurements, but have the impression that there is less leg room in the rear of a 996 compared to a 993. I remember this as follows: when I was looking at both cars, I put the driver seat in a comfortable postion, and see if my kids would fit in the rear. In a 993 there is plenty room for their legs between the front seat and their seat, in the 996, they got to have very skinny legs, there was very little space left. I don't know about the fit of child seats, though. Maybe an idea to bring a car seat to the show room for some comparative emasurements.

Oh my god I like the 928 what's wrong with that car? Hopefully the 928 board don't get offended and this bashing of other people's Porsche other then a 993 only makes you smaller and more arrogant. By the way who voted the 993 to be king of the pedestal of Porsche? I hardly ever see other people other then this board that likes/enjoys bashing others? What's with that? By the way please make me eat my words and join me at Thunderhill(www.thunderhill.com for info) May 5th for some tracking. Regards. Mike.

Sharkie, why worry about depreciation unless you're gonna give it up in a year or two? And if you are - why buy a Porsche; just buy a cheapo Subaru WRX and invest the rest in a safe stock certificate. Buy what you want and forget about depreciation!!!!!
RE 996 vs. 993 room: might be more than numbers. Friend of mine is about 6' 3". He found his 993 to be uncomfortable for him; kept getting leg cramps due to clutch and throttle position in relation to his legs/ankles. Sold the 993; got a 996. He is much happier; noticeably better comfort.
I have driven a 996; by the numbers might be better in acceleration and handling than my 993, but sure didn't feel as much fun. Everything numbed out of it. Then again, if wifey is gonna drive the car, she might find a 993 too harsh.
By the way - be glad! Wifey might be presuading you to buy a Ford Excursion or some similar piece of junk land barge. You got a winner - treat her right!

Agree!!! Just think about what COULD have happened If she likes the 996, why not try persuading her that the 996TT has better gas milage and comes with a prettier interior. In any event, buy one the 996 and enjoy both your relationships (I mean that in the best way)
