Default Inexpensive CCU blower fix

Tip for the day:
If after blowing the lint out of your CCU's sensor blower you find it is non-functional it turns out it is a very common Denso 173000 series part number. If you make an internet search "Denso 173000" you will find any number of blowers of an identical design with various brackets for $50-$75 vs the Porsche part number that is prohibitively expensive. The bracket can be swapped out with the one on the CCU in your car and you are good to go.

Going forward one can add a little filter material to the blower to forestall the build-up of lint that causes the buzzing and ultimately can completely stall the blower.

Maybe we should start a list like in the 964 forum : https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...rts-hacks.html
Which has a link on CCU fan repair.

Thanks for the tip on alternative fan sources!

I have never seen lint stalling the CCU fan. I've seen hundreds. This small fan fails in two ways:
1: The needle bearings wear out and it starts to rattle, independently of any dirt on the rotor. Dirt will of course cause more imbalance, but the fan rattles anyway if the bearing is out.
2: The motor magnets weaken, and this causes the fan motor to stop. It will then have problems to start up again in certain positions.
It is easy to test this, stop the rotor with your finger, if it does not start again when you let go, but just shaking back and forth, it is time to change the fan.
Oiling and cleaning can prolong its life with some weeks or months, but I never bother to do this, I always change the fan when I see these fail. I made my own replacement since the Porsche spare part costs over EUR 400 now.
Cheers,
Tore

Hi Tore,
Maybe my experience is just anecdotal. Several years back the CCU started to buzz so I pulled it out and cleaned the dust out of the fan and put it back in. It seemed to quiet things down. I also seem to recall it triggered an HVAC OBDC code related to it that cleared, but it was so long ago I do not recall exactly. Now that our cars have quite a few more years on them the fans may, as you say are simply failing in most cases and need to be replaced.

I went back and looked at your redesigned CCU sensor blower offering.

I see the value-added aspect of it is that the fan is a much larger and significantly more robust design and minor accumulation of lint/duct on it is of little consequence to reliability. Unlike the original blower where once again it may need to be visited in the future for failing.

I'd be a bit careful with this type of fan sold in the eBay advert.
I do not know the part source of this seller, but it could be useful to ask them.

The fan looks like the ones sold by JP Group, (Dansk) which are/were crap. We had to recall/change all the fans we bought from them, I believe that was 70 fans or so. They start to rattle if you shake them or drive over a bumb in the road while they operate. It is easy to test this, plug it in the CCU, and slightly shake it when it runs. It could of course be that JP Parts upgraded the fans, we haven't tried them since our mishap.
