Default Custom dash lights - is this a K40 Radar Detector?

I just got my '95 993 a little over a month ago, and I've been wondering what these two little lights are. After poking around a bit, they appear to have been part of the K40 "Undetectable Dual Remote Radar Protection System", but I can find no other evidence of this on the car. I'm assuming there should be some kind of sensor both in the front and in the rear - any idea where these are commonly mounted? Anything else I might find inside the car? I've seen posts in the forums that the K40 is a piece of junk, but if I already have it I'd like to at least try it out.

Here is a good link to info about the K40 system:

http://www.buxtonmotorsports.com/K40Electronics.htm

It looks like you have the system that has a sensor in the front and rear. I looked at a C4S that had it and it seemed like it worked pretty well...Anyway, the link above should give you some good info...

Thanks Agro1 - that link was very helpful. I discovered that the front unit is mounted in a custom license plate frame, which was definitely removed from my car. Looks like all that's left are the 2 LEDs in the dash. Oh well.

Well here's a thought. If you want to make those LEDS actually work, you can hook them up to an MSD RPM activated switch. Then you'll have shift lights that start to blink when you approach redline That'd be pretty sweet....

EDIT - one other thing, the front sensor MAY STILL BE THERE. They do not have to be part of the liscense plate but can be hidden in the front air dam in a small opening...FYI...

pbienick,

Do you have a switch like the one below? It's the sort of the on/off switch for the system.

I also have the system on my car which was installed by a PO. Mine works fine but I have not compared it to other devices. My front and rear sensors are mounted behind the bumpers so your's may still be intact. I also have all the factory operating instructions in case you are interested.

Ah ha! The plot thickens! I peered through my front grill and discovered a small unit with a K40 label on it!

Shawn - I don't have a switch like yours, but an aftermarket alarm system was installed in this car (Clifford), and I'm not 100% what this does, if anything (see below).

I would be very interested in getting those factory operating instructions from you - very much appreciated.

Paul dont bother with it! I have the K40 installed in my
TT and as far as I cant tell its only good for alerting me
to Cell phone towers. dont even trust it. It will get you a ticket
pronto. I have done extensive testing with it side by side with
the Valentine one. the V1 finds police the K40 finds cell towers.
in my mind the K40 is worthless. it is 7+ years old but dont use
it. get a new one and just leave the old one there.
Your insurance cant afford the K40 (well maybe it can_ mine cant!!!)

OldGuy - thanks for the info. I think a V1 is definitely in my future.

24FPS - I saw the same question posted on this forum back in December but there were no replies. If you come up with anything, please let me know.

Paul - check under the dash for a switch similar to the one Shawn posted a pic of above. My PO put the switch on the driver's side of the center console under the dash -- very discrete.

I just purchased a c4s that already had the K-40 installed (front and back) radar. Like Old Guy, I've been using V1's for many years, and there is no comparison. I find the K-40 to be much inferior to the V1, and lost confidence because of its many false alerts.

Even though I will definitely not rely on the K40 (thanks OldGuy, mo, & other posts on this forum) and eventually get a V1, it is rather fun poking around and discovering that this stuff is actually there. Check this out! Just have to figure out what it does now. (working on it.....)

Turns out this switch is for my alarm system.
