Unhappy Broken sunroof

My sunroof has decided since the weather is getting nice that it will stop working.

When I went to open the sunroof nothing happend. The sunroof motor makes its normal noise then after about 10 seconds starts making all kinds of what sound like bad noises. I am unable to push the sunroof open so I can not figure out how to get it open to see what the problem is. I have the factory workshop manual but can not find section 60 which is suppose to be the sunroof section. All I find in the manual is the targa sunroof which does me no good. Anyone have any ideas on how to get it open. <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

Mark;

You will have to go all the way back to the '84-'89 Carrera manuals to get the information that is needed. I'll look in my set and post my findings.

Assume you know about the roofliner zippered access & mechnical opening method (w/tool in toolkit) described in the owner's manual. If not, that's a start.
Perhaps this may help until Kevin can get you better info from the 911 shop manual.

Mark, sounds like one of three things...

(1) You have a snapped cable and the loose portion is retracting normally until it hits the stop and the sunroof clutch goes bonkers.

(2) You have a jammed sunroof, and the sunroof clutch goes nuts once the slack is taken out of the cable.

(3) You have a cratered sunroof clutch.

Number (3) is easy to diagnose & fix by retracting the thing using the shop manual proceedure. If the roof has full travel (1) & (2) are out.

Having done work on the sunroof of my 1995, I will advise you to head to a competent mechanic. This is one system that's brutal to work on, and worth any amount of $$$ for someone else to do it.

Hope that helps!

Mark;

I'm looking at the information in section 60. Pages 1 - 3, deal with removing the sunroof panel out of the car. 4 - 6 deal with replaces the wind deflector, and finally we get the information on how to remove the motor, gearbox, and cables, on 7 - 8.

1)Open zipper and unscrew cover screws.
2)Disconnect electric plug,
Unscrew mounting screws for gearbox and motor,
Take gearbox and motor out of car.
3)Unscrew screws of adapter (pertains to removing cables)
Lift guide rail slightly and pull out cables forward (this is done with the sunroof out and tracks exposed)
4)Pull out guide rails forward.
5)Unscrew guide tube mounting nuts and take guide tube out of the car (this is done from the rear zipper area).
6) Check all parts for damage before installing, replace if necessary. Installation is in reverse order.

As usual the manuals leave more questions than answers. If you want you can email me with a fax number and I can fax this section to you. It sounds like a gearbox problem.

Mark,
Had a similar problem with mine last summer, turned out the cable attachment screw had come loose from the sunroof. Watch when you slide the panel back that you don't scratch up the paint on the top of the sunroof like I did.

Thanks, Guys

I will take a look this weekend. I wish they put that section in the 8 volumes of work shop manuals that I just received last night. Really makes me feel good after spending money on manuals and the first thing that goes wrong is not in the manuals. Thanks for the hint about scratching the paint on the sunroof. I will definitly look out for that.

If the project looks to be to much I'll just have them fix it at the local shop when I take my car in to be alligned.
