Unhappy headlights not working, relay issue?

Hello! I am new to this forum and I am a lucky owner of a 993 manual cab -95 that has been imported from California ti Sweden where I live. the engine was swapped for a Swedish one a couple of years ago and Bilsteins have been added. I like it a lot and wanted to put in new headlights since the original ones were a bit worn and yellow in the plastic. I found a new complete set of headlights and popped them in but no light what so ever. when I the checked the headlight I realize that the connector pins have a different layout (they are not all at one side in the socket that attaches in the car), than my original headlight. So I swap the headlight glass from the new ones and put the on the original headlight units and put them in, but still totally dead, no light. there is not even a click from any relay although I still can see the blue light in the dashboard coming on in the instrument cluster. shouldnt there be a relay clicking somwhere? In the fuse and realy box in the front under the hood there is no clear mentioning of any such relay that I can find. R13 is the relay looking thing that according the schematics is hooked up to the fuses to the lights (no fuses broke of course), but whn I pick it a part it is really just a bridge (see picture). So my guess is that I destroyed a relay somewhere, and I can just not find it. can anybody give some suggestions? any of you 993 owners, can you here were the relay to the headlight is located by the click it should give off (I assume)? I suppose the problem from the start was that the sockets are different in my California import and Swedish headlight sockets. SP if anybody is interested I can sell new headlights with old glass cheaply also!

inside the "relay" r13, rather a bridge only

Welcome to Rennlist.
There's no relay for the headlights. R13 is not used.
Check your fuse box, low and high beam fuses, number 20,21,22 and 23.

Maybe you have tried some Litronic headlights in a car meant for the standard halogen type, or the opposite. Are there any boxes marked with "High Voltage" on each side of the luggage compartment? If so is your car equipped with the Litronic xenon headlights.
Cheers,
Tore, Oslo

one of the new units, Litronic?
hello Oslo! you are a genius! there are no "high voltage" things in the front of my car as I can find and the new light units I tried to put in have a different bulb attached to some heavy stuff in the lid to the bulb (not found in my original lamp units), I assume this is Litronic as you said? so I attached Litroni to standard lamps as you suggested I guess, so what fuses have I blown then? 20-23 are all OK as far as I can see. But I will check them again, and the low beams should be the same anyhow, or?

Yes, your picture shows a Litronic headlight with the low beam D2S xenon lamp.
The halogen high beam light is the same in both.
I am not sure on the differences in pinout of the halogen and Litronic headlight connector, so it is difficult to predict the results of using a wrong light in your car. Check all fuses is probably a good start :-)
All the best,
Tore

Hello!
All fuses checked, even in the engine bay, they are all OK. And I was wrong about the "relay r13" it was the bridge in the r12 position, r13 is empty as you said.
what could have been damaged when I put the Litronic lamps in?? the problem came after I did that. everything else electric in the car seems to work fine. is there some main connector for high and low beams on both sides that could have been damaged? all the four lights are out and all worked before. and as said, the blue high beam light clicks in in the instrument cluster as it should when it is applied inside the car. annoying issue! due to very cold weather I cant take the car to any mechanic either (-16C today brrr).

yes and sorry. the litronic I put in temporarliy has this layout of the pins in the connector, see picture
the original one has all pins on the same side (corresponding to the right one in this picture)

Since the connector is different, with regard to pins, look inside the car opening.
I recall some posts dealing the connector being damaged / alignment of the plug moved, when there was a mis-alignment.

It is possible you are able to fully seat to old headlight, but the plug not fully engaging.

Check the switch? My headlight switch spontaneously stopped working. I had to clean out the contacts.

Hi Fredrik,
Once the plug and socket alignment check out use your finger and rub a little silicone or Teflon lube on the connector seal with your finger. It will help in making sure the plug fully seats. Also, I have never heard of a 993 Lens or reflector yellowing. Did someone add yellow film to the lens by intention?
Andy ;-)

Fredrik is probably referring to the plastic insert, at the bottom of the lens. This is known for becoming yellow.
This has been discussed many times here on the forum, try a search for "Yellowing headlight inserts"
I tried to bleach mine, but gave up and bought new lenses instead since they were a bit scratched and chipped anyway. New lenses come with the plastic insert, and was a massive visual upgrade to my lights.
Cheers,
Tore

Update: there was indeed a problem with connection to the sockets! I loosened the and took the cables out and applied them correctly to the back of the headlight units, and they both worked! unbelievable and fantastic success! I am so grateful for all help! I suppose the cold weather played a part in the fact that they did not attach correctly the last mms or so before (-16C outdoors and perhaps around 0C in the garage). And yes i referred to the yellowed plastic part in the bottom of the front part of the light construction. thanks!!!
cheers from Fredrik in the cold Sweden

First thing I normally do if one or the other headlight doesn't light up is give the front of the light a thump with the heel of my hand. Used to have to do this quite a lot as the contacts inside behind the light had cracked and broken over time. I ended up replacing the plug the light connects to and haven't had a dull moment since.
