Question clutch grinds when cold?

Okay, this sounds really strange and I just thought I was still learning how to drive my C4s, but I'm quite certain it's not me. Everytime I first start my car and shift from 1st to 2nd gear, the clutch slips and grinds. This only happens once, after that one occurrence, the clutch is fine and behaves normally. So, now to remedy this problem, I carefully shift from 1st to neutral for a few seconds and then to 2nd gear. Has anyone had this type of problem? Is there something wrong with my clutch?

My 97 993 does exactly the same thing. I keep the car in Colorado, and have only noticed it on mornings when the outside temp has dropped pretty low.

I let the engine warm up; the first time I shift into second, the synchronizers grind. I have no idea what could cause this.

The problem goes away once I shift gears and only occurs during cold weather.

I'm glad its not just mine!...In previous cars I have let the car sit for a minute or so after starting on a cold day (er, thats every day in the UK) to allow it to warm up. However, I read in the manual that you should not do this in the 993 (just keep the revs down until things are warmed up).

Again, its only between 1st and 2nd and its not been bad enough for me to start worrying about it.

The "grinding" of the gears during shifts when the transmission is "cold" is a very common problem. The easiest solution is to "double clutch" the shifts until the transmission fluid is warm.

Some have tried with varying results switching transmission fluids. On Robin's site there is run down of how Robin tried to solve some shifting problems and his findings with regard to using various fluids.

I switched over to Redline synthetic transmission fluid and also added a "climbing agent" that apparently some of the race teams add to the trannys. Supposedly it pulls lubricants up into the gears.(?) I think the synthetic fluid definitely helps when the temps drop.

Hey Nels,

I have to echo the statements of all the other posters.
When I lived up north where there was a change of seasons, every car I ever owned grined when cold between first and second. Sometimes the grind was between Reverse and 1st.
I would suggest Bet's recommendation of double clutching..

good luck

I have noticed that my pedal drops to about half mast when it is around freezing outside. It also seems to engage/disengage with the pedal closer to the floor. Is it the same phenomenon, or a symptom of needing to bleed the clutch?
