Question Fire extinguisher..

Anybody have a fire extinguisher in their car? If so, what make do you recommend? Some types apparently can cause engine damage. Thanks

Phil,
Sounds good, but thank goodness I didn't send you a pink shark...

I have a 10BC large Halon bottle mounted to the passenger seat rail, with a Brey Krause stainless steel mounting. God help me if I ever flip the car and that missle comes loose. The only reason I have it there is that it is mandatory to conform to PCA Club Rules for Driver Ed and Time Trials.

When I get some extra $, I think I will go to a remote Halon system. The bottle is mounted in the trunk and the Halon is piped to the engine compartment. THis is probably the best set up you can have...and at the price of 10BC Halon bottles in the US, it isn't thsat much more.

I hope you never need the extinguisher.

Martin

For what it is worth. I try and carry a 2.5 lb 1211 Halon Handlheld bottle in my air/oil cooled rigs. I have found that they can be mounted pretty easily and safely. Many think that the 1211 bottles are no more. Thay can still be found. I just saw and talked to a firebottle vendor at last weekend's hotrod swap. He was selling current tested units for around $100 for a 2.5 lb-er. The nice thing about true halon is the lack of damage from putting out the fire, if used. The dry chemicals in firebottles are quite caustic.

As far as size, my 2 cents worth is from my various experiences helping out with roadside car fires and one of my own. If you cannot get it out quick with the 2.5 lb unit, it gets pretty intense for a DIY firefighter. Better safe than burned. :^)

I also agree with the above post. If you want to get real serious, the on-board rigs are hard to beat. Used one once in a road race rig. Great peace of mind as I exited post haste. Saved the car too !

Good luck with your quest.
