993 lifter diy write up

Make sure you totally clean any bits from the 'cup' in the rocker that holds the tappet - my final photo above - the RHS of the rocker is the 'cup'.
There is a narrow oil channel in the rocker that feeds oil into the base of this 'cup' - I even filled the 'cup' with oil, and made sure the oil runs back out into the centre of the rocker, then you know the oil channel is clear.
It's easy - you'll work it all out - it's a mechanical joy to work on.

Wow, thank you for the pics and info. If I could bother you on one last thing.. turning the engine after installing each lifter is a bit sketchy. Any advice on that?
thanks again

Literally stick a socket on the nut in the centre of your rear fan, if you see what I mean... I planned to do all of the lower tappets and plugs and cam-cover gaskets at the same time, so I had six plugs out, which makes the engine relatively easy to turn by hand.
If you only have three plugs out, it may be slightly more difficult.
Does anyone know off-hand what size the nut is on the back of the engine?

Here is a video link to of a video that horrible sound coming from the engine. Some say when the engine is warmed up the sound from the lifter goes away. It's the opposite here. When I first started the engine up there was no knocking sound immediately. As soon as I rev up the engine a tiny bit the knocking is there.

Just to be totally clear on this - you only undo two bolts for each rocker - these are the dark coloured bolts. Nothing else.
I'm going to do another photo ..... here you go, with arrows
Do the rockers, one at a time, so that you are certain that you put the same rockers back in the same place. I made sure each bolt went back in the same place, but that's probably OCD

One more quick note. As I didn't want to start the car up before I made sure there was enough oil and it was clean. I emptied the oil(just about 10 ct of oil came out) and I added new Mobil 1 15-50 oil in there. The oil I had before was Bred Penn. I examined the oil to see if there were was any metal shavings or anything that should worry me. The oil looked clean. The color of it was darker but I think Bred Penn is a darker colored oil anyways.
So, that is a good thing.

Yes - but I find two things about videos...
1) the sound is really not the same as 'real life'... it's hollower, louder, tinnier, who knows.
2) diagnosis from miles away can be just utterly wrong.
If I were you, I would take off the LHS lower cam-cover, as it is easy, and see what you find.
If there's a bigger/different issue, then it's easy enough for you to put it back together if you need to take it to a mechanic.

I do think you are a bit young-lookin' to be doing oil-changes, but I guess those small hands come in useful.
When you get to removing the old tappets out of the rockers, don't be tempted to put the rocker in a vice. You don't want any chance of damaging the edges.
I just put them on the floor, on thick plastic floor matting, on a cloth, and stood on the cam-end on the rocker, and used grips on the tappet that sticks out of the rocker-cup end.
You'll see what I mean when you do it.
If one of your tappet seals has failed, that tappet will fall right out of the rocker, maybe even as you undo the rocker and take it away from the engine.

Just one more thing... probably the most difficult thing to do is putting the cam-cover (with new gasket) back.
Apologies if you know this already - if you don't want any oil-leaks, you must get it on flat/straight, and the suggested way is by putting all of the 11? bolts back in diagonal sequence, then finger-tight diagonally, then torque diagonally.
I think there are a couple that I couldn't get my torque-wrench on, because there are a few things in the way, so I tightened them so they felt the same as the others.

....oh and I don't think you can put the cylinder part of the rocker back on wrong, but just be sure when you take the first one off you note which way round it is....
Side that faces the engine...
side that you can see, facing out.
I wasn't planning on doing a full how-to, so just check when you take yours off.....

You’ve been so helpful.
If you ever make to Atlanta you have a friend here. I’d be more than happy to buy you lunch/dinner or beer or whatever. Or maybe I can send a nice bottle of wine to your house.
Thank you again.

And I owe you some sincere thanks - I was going to buy some shares a few hours back, but posting on here has delayed me - the shares have since dropped another 3%, so you saved me loads of money
