Angry Frozen McGard Lock, Drilling Bolt Arg! Help Please!

Hi,

I been try to remove the McGuard locks
of my car. I've gotten all but one off.
The one left is frozen. The shop tried
everything they could think off, it not
coming off. The lug is torn up now, and
the only think left to do is drill the
@!#!% bolt off. I told them to wait
until I could figure out how painful it
going to be to install a new bolt. Help!
Is this a big deal. How much is going cost me? Any advice?

Here's an option I did with a car I bought long ago. Take a socket that's just smaller then the diameter of the lock bolt. note, tht this socket will be no good when you are done, so get some cheap ones. You want to wedge that socket onto the head of the bolt, to do this use a hammer. When you have the socket set, use your ratchet and take the bolt/socket combo off. I did this on a miata with locks on all wheels. Takes about 2 minutes and proved to me that if somebody really wants your wheels, then they will get them.

I did that samething on a truck I used to have. I hammered an impact socket onto the lock lug and it came right off. Impact socket, still good.

What about using one of those "Gator sockets" you see on the infomercials?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for help. We tried, heat, chisel,
3 keys (they all broke). Some how the
lock just does not want come off. I'm
a bit afraid to try to socket method because
I don't want to damage the rim (Kinesis K28).
What is the downside of just drilling out the
bolt.

Sid,
The only downside is that you would have to replace it, which would require a few hours (maybe) of labor. I think you have to remove the upright and use a press to get the stud out, you don't want to hammer it out because you could damage your wheel bearing.
Much better than damaging your nice wheels.
Greg
