Post Gear change at ?? RPM / engine cut-off at redline

94 993 c2 cab owner.

What is the ideal RPM to shift from 1st to 2nd for optimum acceleration. I dont do any racing and just drive on the street!

BTW, how slow can u go in third or fourth without damaging the engine. And does the engine get damaged at all if you go slow in the higher gears. I know, I know, you have to zoom these cars, but then I have soooo much stop and go traffic....

Cheers

Redline! (naturally, this goes with other gear changes as well)

Yes, PCars are one of the few street cars set up to perform best at redline. There are lots of "high performance" cars out there from others that do better if you shift earlier than redline, but not your Porsche.

My understanding is "red lining" in 1st gear is a Is this correct?

Phil,
Other than using up a lot of rubber, I would not see why... Having said that, I usually only go up to about 5000 in first when accelerating really fast, but do go all the way now and then. BTW: I used to have a rev counter on my old SC which had the 7000 rev mark at 12 o'clock. This helps when *redlining*. Anybody have an idea where one can be found?

RS, I've been wondering about that, it would be so easy to make gauge that has red line in 12 o'clock.

Everyone who wants to go fast should always go up to redline (if driving a Porsche, -57 Vette could be a little different).

BTW, when we really 'stretch the legs' with my -75 SC, we go all the way up about 7500 and she loves it!

Yes Kim,
but Ruf used to have one that was set up like that to begin with, so that the text in the face did not stand on its head...

Contrary to evident popular belief, I feel that my car stops making usable power at around 6400 or 6500 rpm, so that is where I try and shift - even at the track. Of course I am a little late sometimes though...

Might save a tiny fraction of wear and tear too, you never know. Of course, When I am chasing Greg, I bounce off the limiter (I never catch him though ).

There! See what I mean! Twisting the rev counter makes the figures look funny... I want a rev counter which looks right and is twisted!

This is for the Flying Finn,
I bet you wish that you still had your "75SC", Its a one of a kind being that the rest of the world saw them in 77.

Zumbera,

Back in the 80’s, the common amateur misconception circulating around the PCA was to shift the engine just after peak power. I would shift at redline and win the trophies. My friends would warn me I was ruining my engine. My competitors accused me of modifying my engine!

As for rotating your tach: In competition, I am sometimes too focused on where I am driving to watch the tach. In that case the 993 rev limiter tells me when it is time to shift!

In summary, shift your 993 at redline for max performance.

Regards,
George
