Question Tiptronics questions

Hi all,

I have '96 Targa with Tiptronics transmission:

I am wondering whether someone can shed some lights on the following questions:

1. Why do I feel that the engine seem to slightly stall around 2700 rpm in 2nd gear when I accelerating? (does this happen also for manual transmission 993's)

2. For fastest acceleration, what's the best? Leave it in auto mode or use Tiptronics mode?

3. I guess as with manual 993, it is not advisable to shift down to 1st gear.

Any comments will be appreciated.

ps. Before anyone of you preaches me about the benefits of 6 speed over tip, I know, just couldn't find a 993 coupe/targa with a 5 speed or 6 speed (I heard there was only 9 manual 993 coupes imported here with manual trans, and 4 of them have already been totaled....)

John:
Repeat after me,"I am just driving the tip that I bought for my wife while I search for the perfect Turbo S". Seriously though, it seems that all tips have the hesitation in 2nd. I've been able to get around it with my driving style. As for acceleration, remember, you are searching for the perfect Turbo S to take care of all that, meanwhile, I would say tip mode offers the best because you can drive at 4000 in 2nd. Off the line and to high speed both work pretty well, but for throttle response auto will go to the next higher gear too soon for me. I might monkey around with upping the idle, and since Steve at rennsport does not offer any chips I'm not gonna mess with some of the others out there. As for shifting down to first, the car will not let you screw it up, so if it will shift, I have no problem doing it. So, go get yerself a drink holder and a beverage of yer choice, sit back, and drive what I think is the best automatic transmissioned sportscar in the world!

My 95 does the same thing in second.

Question, does your 96 shift smoothly from 1st to 2nd, or does is slam?

My 96 does the same thing in second. The
car is so sluggish in auto mode i have
only driven in auto a few times.

Is it ok to always drive in tip mode?

Is there anyway to force auto mode to shift
at higher speeds?

I have a C4 996 with a Tiptronic S and I have also owned a 964 C2 with a Tip.

The Tip defaults to 1st when stopped in the auto mode, despite what the display shows, and what you are feeling in 2nd is the torque converter, in either mode....it is normal....look in the archives for info about this

Hi all!

Thanks for all the replies & comments so far.

I drive 95% of the time in Tip mode, because I feel that in Auto mode in the city, the engine is revving too low. I suspect this has even contributed to "check engine" light coming up on me a couple of time. (just my suspicion).

I don't like shifting down from 2nd to 1st when car is moving more than 10 km/hr (actually I tried to avoid shifting down to 1st unless the car is almost stationary).

To avoid the slight hesitation, I sometimes start off from 1st and shift up to 2nd when the rpm is around 3000.

I would really like to hear from an expert like Viken (are you there?) to comment on this, if possible.

1.Maybe Im not very sensitive, but I dont notice any form of stalling in 2nd. It can be a little sluggish, depending on how slowly you put your foot down. I have never felt the need to shift down due to potential stalling.

2. In my case, I have found that both give you a very fast acceleration. The only difference being that the auto will change gear earlier, whereas the tip, you can red line it if you want.

3. I have found no real need to shift down to 1. I have noticed the car shift to 1 if necessary but then it shifts to 2 very quickly.

Thanks all for posting your comments!

By the way, I came across a Japanese Porsche magazine with advertisement claiming that it is possible to replace Tiptronics transmission with manual 5 or 6 speed.

Has anyone heard about this conversion in the US or Europe? How much does it cost?

It probably is possible but it sounds expensive and dodgy. IMHO it would be better to buy a manual.

I sometimes pull the shifter straight down from "D" to "1" and this enables me to shift manually to "2" and "3" much more efficiently without the lag. The problem with the tiptronic mode is that it automatically shifts the gear from 1 to 2 before u even get close to the readline, but this way, you can get a quicker shift without the hesitation. This way may take a little practice to perfect it, but it will definately be faster than both the tiptronic and auto modes.
